Welcome to students from Cape Breton Island, across Canada and around the world. Enjoy your Island as the backdrop to your education.

We want to make sure that your first week at CBU is one to remember. That’s why we’re making sure you have all of the information you need before you start your journey here. This year, Week of Welcome at CBU runs from September 1-9, 2018. We can’t wait to see you throughout the week!

Week of Welcome is an exciting, fun-filled week to get comfortable on campus, meet new friends, and learn tricks and tips on how to make the most of your year at CBU.


Your Canada Agenda

Airport Pick Up

Date: Monday, August 27th
Time: Ongoing
Location: JA Douglas McCurdy Sydney Airport

Those who have submitted airport pickup forms will be greeted at the airport by a CBU representative. Service continues until September 5, 2018.

Orientation to Cape Breton Island

Date: Monday, August, 27th
Time: 9am – 4pm
Location: International Student & Study Abroad Centre

Shuttles will leave from CBU to take students to purchase groceries and necessity items and obtain their Nova Scotia ID and social insurance numbers. Service continues until September 5, 2018.

Canada Eh!

Date: Tuesday, August 28
Time: 9am – 4pm
Location: Multi-Purpose Room

Adjust to life in Canada by learning about Canadian culture and connecting with other students. Free lunch provided.

Information Sessions

Date: Wednesday, August 29 & Thursday, August 30
Time: 10am – 6:30pm
Location: Great Hall & Courtyard

A full day of speakers, presentations, activities and prizes, with free lunch and t-shirts provided. Learn job-search skills, housing and healthcare information and have the chance to WIN a $500 tuition waiver.

*Students can come and go as they please.

Come one, Come all! This is a day you don’t want to miss. At Campus Kick-Off Carnival Day, first-year students will be able to move in to residence, your new home away from home, and then spend the day celebrating, meeting new people and having a blast!

So grab your friends and join us for a campus-wide BBQ, Live-entertainment and carnival games including an inflatable 70ft obstacle course, dunk tank, and bungee run. You’ll also have a chance to catch a campus tour, get a pic in our photo booth or have your Smart Card made.

Who should attend: All new students! Whether you’re living on-campus or off-campus, all first-year students are encouraged to attend. We can’t wait to celebrate with you!

Move-in for first-year residence students

11am – 4pm
Carnival games including a 70-foot obstacle course, dunk tank, bungee run and more!

12 noon
Free BBQ in residence courtyard for all! Vegetarian and gluten-free options available.

8:30pm
Bonfire with entertainment from Taylor Burton, past CBUSU Executive and amazing musician.

Want to join President Dingwall for breakfast, but need a ride? Hop on the free CBU shuttle!

Shuttle picks ups are scheduled to leave from:

  • Scotiabank on Charlotte St,
  • Protocase in Ashby Corner,
  • Giant Tiger,
  • Foodland in Glace Bay

Shuttles will leave at 8:15am, 8:45am and 9:15am.

CAPERS Men’s soccer team take on Fort Kent at the CBU Soccer Field for a pre-season game. Support our CAPERS student-athletes at the CBU field and get a taste of our outstanding school spirit! We bleed orange. Do you?

First-year university students have a lot of questions and likely some worries: Will the workload be too much? What is the best way to take notes in lectures? How do I approach a professor? Well have no fear, we’re here to answer your questions, provide some tips and tricks, and help you make some new friends along the way.

Start Smart! and the School orientations are FREE, informative events, full of info and fun. From a Mi’kmaw welcoming ceremony to keynote speakers and informative sessions, the day is jam-packed with everything you need to know to transition into university life.

Pre-registration for Start Smart! Day, including School Orientations, is now closed, but you can still attend even if you haven’t pre-registered! Simply register in the Great Hall between 8:30 am and 9:30 am on Tuesday, September 4th. See you there!

CBU Paint Battle – Does your school have what it takes to win CBU’s epic Paint Battle and take home the trophy? Show up and find out! You’ll be provided with a white Tee at the end of Start Smart!, the School who’s colour appears the most at the end of the battle will be declared the 2018 winner.

7pm
Yoga – Breathing Space Yoga Studio will lead students in a class designed to relax them as they head into their first day of classes. Class will be held outside if weather permits; rain location is Great Hall.

Welcome to your first week of classes at CBU. You got this. And we’ll have help waiting around every corner to make sure you find your class.

Games Night will be hosted at the Pit. Wind down after class by playing board games, pool, ping pong and listen to some great music. Did we mention there’s prizes?

The WOW Week Lip Sync Battle presented by the CBUSU will take place at the Pit. Gather your friends and show us your best moves. There’s a $100 cash prize. Sign up is available now at the CBUSU front desk or by emailing su_vpp@cbu.ca

Come and meet your professors. Ask important questions, and get answers directly. Later on in the evening, the CBUSU will host a hypnotist show with Spidey, who has been nominated Canadian Magician of the Year.

Get to know your Profs in the Pit. They like lunch too.

This event is for new and returning students to get to know their professors and CBU staff members in a casual, relaxed environment. So come say hello and enjoy some snacks!

7:45 – 9pm
The Hypnotist Show with Spidey will take place in the MegaPit. You probably saw him on Netflix or America’s Got Talent. See him live at the Pit. Grab your friends and come on down! This is a wet/dry event. Doors open at 7:45pm, show begins at 8:00pm. Tickets are $5.00 and will be sold at the CBUSU front desk during Week of Welcome.

ORANGE OUT is one of the BIGGEST days of the year. Come out to support your CAPERS soccer teams, experience the amazing school spirit of CBU and have fun with friends. This is a day for the entire community, so come be a part of it! CAPERS vs UNB

11:00 am – Free Community BBQ @ The Pit – Sponsored by Cape Breton University Alumni. Face painting, orange army training, noise-maker station and music! Full for all ages!

12:40 pm – March  to the soccer field with the Orange Army
