Intro to Bharatanatyam: Indian Workshop between Bollywood and Bharatanatyam
Thursday, March 23, 2017
Centre for Sound Communities
2 p.m.- 4 p.m.
This is a lecture-demonstration on the representation of classical dance in the Indian film industry, screening relevant dance scenes and sequences from a number of films. There has been a long tradition of classically-inspired choreography used in Bollywood (Hindi films), Kollywood (Tamil films), Tollywood (Telegu films), etc. The popularization of classical dance through film has certainly played a significant role in the enthusiasm for dance training in diasporic Indian communities. At the same time, the stylization of these dance forms by film choreographers has led to the development of a sort of “Semi-Classical” dance style that lies somewhere between Bollywood and Bharatanatyam.
