Healthy Individuals and Healthy Communities – Can You Be Re-Lit by Poetry?

The Sustainability Project.

Restoring and Reinvigorating the Mind Through Bibliotherapy

with Dr. Julie Sutherland

Tuesday, January 23, noon, CBU Student Lounge

Bibliotherapy is the complementary treatment of stress, anxiety and other conditions through “slow reading.” Those who practice it believe that attentive immersion in great literature — especially poetry — can relieve, restore and reinvigorate the human mind. In this session, Dr. Julie Sutherland will introduce the concept of bibliotherapy and discuss in what ways it can be applied in Cape Breton to promote mental wellness for a stronger, healthier community.

Dr. Julie Sutherland is the International Ambassador for ReLit. She is Adjunct Professor in the Department of Cultural and Creative Studies at Cape Breton University. She also co-owns Doktor Luke’s Coffee House in Sydney, Nova Scotia and freelances as a writer and editor.

The Compassionate Community series is organized by The Sustainability Project and is co-sponsored by the CBU Community Garden Project, the Animal Ethics Project, New Dawn, the Cooperative Studies Club, CBU’s Office of Research and Graduate Studies, the Shannon School of Business, the School of Arts and Social Sciences and the CBU Library.
