Get to know the CBU Road Squad!
My name is Matthew Brown and I just graduated from my BBA with a Major in Marketing this year (2016). I love playing soccer and snowboarding and spending every minute I can outside enjoying nature, rain or shine. I try to be healthy and as active as possible and if you know me you know I am in love with the ocean… any ocean, it’s hard to get me out of the water.
I choose CBU because it allowed me to stay home and meet the world!
I spent the last 4 years attending CBU and while the time flew by I had an unforgettable experience here. During my time at CBU I had the opportunity to be a part of the Study Abroad program which lead me to live and study in St. Thomas, U.S Virgin Islands located in the Caribbean Sea. The University of the Virgin Islands has its very own beach where I have never once gone swimming without seeing many sea turtles. There are so many turtles in fact that the University even has a sea turtle club!
It is amazing that staying on our island can provide so much diversity and opportunities to learn about different cultures. From the classroom to the sports fields of CBU, I have had the chance to meet and make lifelong friendships with individuals from all over the world!
I LOVE the fact that Cape Breton Island is well… an island. I love that you can go anywhere and find an amazing view of the sea touching the sky and that our island is home to some of the friendliest and most helpful people in the world. With world renowned drives, hikes, and nature where else would you want to spend your university experience? …Don’t forget all of our breathtaking sunsets either.
Most recently, I was accepted into the Master of Global Business graduate program for September. I will be living and studying in Victoria, British Columbia; Kaohsiung City, Taiwan; and Linz, Austria. I credit my acceptance into this program from the global and multicultural foundation I gained by attending CBU.
Looking back after just graduating I would not change anything about my CBU experience. I can’t imagine spending the past four years any other way than making memories with my friends, traveling, enjoying my beautiful island, learning what I want to do for the rest of my working life and especially meeting and becoming a part of a CBU family.
I was hired for the summer to work as part of the Road Squad here at CBU which I could not be more excited for! I look forward to seeing you all out and about with us enjoying our beautiful island this summer.
As one of the few females amongst many boys in my big family, I grew to love being that girl who could do “boy activities”. I thrive on adventure and getting a little scare in life and believe the contrary to what so many Cape Bretoners believe– there is SO much to do on this island!
I have been hired to work this summer as part of the CBU Summer Promo Squad. My co-worker and I will be working hard to show our whole island exactly why you should stay at home and attend Cape Breton University.
My journey with CBU was highly influenced by my travelling experience in Europe. After spending two years in Europe, mostly France, I moved back to Cape Breton feeling like a whole new person but having nothing to show of my incredible experiences. I thought it was worth a shot to call up our beloved Cape Breton University to see if there were courses I could take to somehow open the doors to be accepted into a program. Fortunately, I had previous college credits that transferred over and was able to apply for a Bachelor of Arts Community Studies Program.
At age 27 I embarked on my first ever University experience. My first day I sat there feeling terrified of the work load that was about to be thrown at me (as well as feeling old enough to parent my classmates). These were new grounds I was walking. Very quickly, I became surprisingly adjusted to the work-load; even exams were do-able for me. I received help and guidance from my Prof’s whenever needed and felt that they actually knew who I was. For the first time in my life I made it through a season of school with high marks and feeling extremely accomplished. I cannot express what a victory this has been for me in my life and how amazing it feels to be working towards a hopeful future for myself.
I am so thankful to have this perfect little University in my own backyard, where I am able to stay close to my family and friends, my beloved island and work towards my dream career. Thank-you CBU! I look forward to spending more time getting to know my community and hopefully will meet many of you out at all of the coolest spot and events around our island this summer!
Follow them on social media to stay up-to-date on their adventures and events they will be attending.
