The Education Department at CBU invites applications from highly motivated Mi’kmaq educators who are fluent Mi’kmaw speakers for a tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor to commence September 2019 (or as soon as possible thereafter).
One of Canada’s youngest and most ambitious universities, Cape Breton University recognizes its location on Cape Breton island as part of Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq people. The territory is covered by the “Treaties of Peace and Friendship” which Mi’kmaq and Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet) people first signed with the British Crown in 1725. The treaties established the rules for what was to be an ongoing relationship between nations.
CBU delivers a sixteen-month, 60 credit Bachelor of Education (Elementary and Intermediate/Secondary Education) (with concentrations in Aboriginal Education and Sustainability); a Master of Education in Sustainability, Creativity & Innovation, and a variety of Diplomas and Certificates (Education Technology, Counselling, Curriculum and Science Teaching) for in-service teachers. It also offers a MEd (Education Technology) in partnership with Memorial University of Newfoundland. Most of the post licensure programs are offered online, while the Bachelor of Education program includes a mixture of delivery modes including on-campus, in-community, online, and blended offerings.
The successful candidate will be expected to provide leadership in Aboriginal courses and programs, including Mi’kmaw language, as an integral part of our dynamic educational team delivering the B.Ed program and Teacher Education graduate and post baccalaureate programs at CBU.
Applicants should be certified teachers who possess in-depth knowledge and expertise in Indigenous pedagogy, Treaty education, including Two-eyed seeing, De-colonization, and Aboriginal teaching and learning models. Additionally, and consistent with CBU’s commitment to Mi’kmaw communities to support language preservation initiatives, applicants must be fluent Mi’kmaw language speakers, capable of teaching Curriculum and Instruction courses in Mi’kmaw language within the Bachelor of Education program.
Applicants must be experienced educators (with work experience in either or both the P-12 or post-secondary education systems) and have exemplary communication and interpersonal skills. A minimum credential of a Master’s Degree in Education with 3 (three) years’ experience at the post-secondary level and evidence of teaching and research is required; a Bachelor of Education degree is also highly desirable. A PhD in Aboriginal Education (or enrolment in a program) will be considered an asset. Fluency in the Mi’kmaw language is a position requirement.

CBU teaches programs on campus, off campus in locations across and outside of Canada, and on-line. The university and its partners will therefore provide opportunities for faculty members to teach in different modes in different locations as part of their regular workload. While these opportunities may not be available equally for all faculty positions in all programs, a clear willingness to teach in different modes and locations will be noted as part of your application.
