CBU invites applications for a tenure-track position in French & Community Studies at the rank of Assistant Professor to commence July 2019.

French (FRNC) focuses on the development of critical, creative, and communicative skills enabling students to better understand and interact with the world around them. Now more than ever the most important skill for any educated person is advanced literacy. Not just the ability to read, but to read critically, to analyze, and to question.

The ideal candidate’s primary area of teaching responsibility will be courses in French/ Francophone Literature and Culture. The hiring committee welcomes applicants with expertise in Acadian and French-Canadian Literature and Culture.

The second area of teaching responsibility will be Community Studies (COMS) courses. Community Studies courses are core to CBU’s BACS degree. These core courses arm students with skills to be an engaged citizen and a confident contributor in their communities. The fundamental objectives of the COMS core courses are:

  • job acquisition skills, job retention skills, a professional work ethic, skills of adaptation, occupational skills, and vocational awareness;
  • an understanding of the philosophy, values, policies, and procedures of particular organizations;
  • integration of theory and practice; and
  • an understanding of the relationship between the placement activities and the wider community.

The successful candidate must possess a PhD in French or Francophone Studies, and be bilingual (English and French).

The search committee will rank very highly candidates who have a demonstrated experiential learning teaching style. Previous teaching experience at the undergraduate level in these areas and a willingness to teach in closely related areas of study and/or other faculties are thus a strong preference for this position.

CBU teaches programs on campus, off campus in locations across and outside of Canada, and on-line. The university and its partners will therefore provide opportunities for faculty members to teach in different modes in different locations as part of their regular workload. While these opportunities may not be available equally for all faculty positions in all programs, a clear willingness to teach in different modes and locations will be noted as part of your application.

Applicants are expected to demonstrate potential and commitment with regard to teaching, research/creative/scholarly activities and service to Cape Breton University, community and profession.
