Assistant Professor, Environmental History


CBU invites applications for a tenure-track position in Environmental History at the rank of Assistant Professor to commence July 2019.

The ideal candidate’s primary area of teaching responsibility will be in environmental history, broadly defined. The search committee will rank very highly candidates who demonstrate flexibility and range in their secondary area of teaching and are committed to innovative forms of pedagogy. Courses in this secondary area of teaching may focus on thematic, comparative, applied, and/or global subjects. Teaching duties will include environmental history, as well appropriate introductory and core courses in the History program.

The successful candidate must possess a PhD in History. Exceptional candidates with an imminent PhD defence date and/or a PhD in a closely related scholarly discipline may also be considered. Candidates with additional expertise in Indigenous studies will also be highly ranked. Previous teaching experience at the undergraduate level and a willingness to teach in closely related areas of study are a strong preference.

In addition to superlative teaching skills, the successful candidate must also possess a well-defined research program, as demonstrated by conference presentations, peer-reviewed publications, and successful grant applications.

The successful candidate will be required to participate fully in the collegial life of the university by accepting departmental administrative duties and participating on university-wide committees and governance bodies.

CBU teaches programs on campus, off campus in locations across and outside of Canada, and on-line. The university and its partners will therefore provide opportunities for faculty members to teach in different modes in different locations as part of their regular workload. While these opportunities may not be available equally for all faculty positions in all programs, a clear willingness to teach in different modes and locations will be noted as part of your application.

Applicants are expected to demonstrate potential and commitment with regard to teaching, research/creative/scholarly activities and service to Cape Breton University, community and profession.

The union affiliation of this position is with the Cape Breton University Faculty Association.
