Under the direction of the Manager of Facilities Management, the Cape Breton University Maintenance Department comprises a variety of tradespeople to maintain the facilities in good working order. The staff include, but is not limited to, one or more of the following: a plumber, electrician, carpenter, general maintenance crew, heating plant operator, oil burner mechanic, HVAC technician, and a locksmith.
These tradespeople assist in preventative maintenance, along with emergency and general maintenance, of our facilities to ensure a safe and efficient workplace. They respond to work order requests via our online work order system (linked above). Four of the maintenance staff work in the boiler room during the heating season to maintain our pellet and oil burning heating system. All staff participate in regular trade duties along with non-traditional trade work, e.g deliveries and setups and takedowns for events. The Maintenance Staff participate in training for upgrading their skills and safe work practices throughout the year.
Each year, the Facilities Management Department hires several students to perform general duties such as mowing lawns, painting parking markings, cleanup, setups, and etc. Applications are called each year around March or April, and the number of hires is determined each year, based on requirements and budgetary approval.
