Job Description

The Project Assistant will support the ongoing educational programming, research and community engagement work of the CBU Working Group on Poverty (CBUWGP). Key tasks for the winter semester will be those associated with the planning of a major conference for the fall of 2021, which the group hopes to name in memory of Dr. Margaret Dechman, and which will include key legacy pieces such as a memorial video. In addition to this, the assistant will participate in regular meetings of the Working Group and may assist in development of an outreach and social media strategy aimed at student engagement, both for the conference and for the broader activities of the CBUWGP.

Qualifications

  • Professional interest in social justice education, community engagement, and social change;
  • Strong interest in poverty and equity issues;
  • Strong interest in building awareness in the campus and broader community about poverty issues in our local community and beyond;
  • Ability to work collaboratively and to take on independent projects;
  • Ability to commit 15 hours per week;
  • Reliable and organized worker;
  • Good interpersonal communication skills
  • Good writing and organizational skills.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Ongoing dialogue with CBUWGP committee members concerning events, programming and research.
  • Assist CBUWGP members with the planning of the Margaret Dechman fall conference on Poverty at CBU (theme for 2021 conference: Mental Health and Addictions).
  • Assist with social media and other promotional activities with regard to the fall conference and the broader work of the CBUWGP.
  • Assist in developing a strategy for student engagement with the work of the CBUWGP.
  • Other duties to be determined and assigned

Learning Outcomes

  • Student will gain skills in communication, time management and effective community engagement.
  • Student will gain leadership skills through reaching out and providing guidance to other students wishing to become involved in our fall conference and in the ongoing the work of the CBUWGP. Student will enhance their computer literacy skills through collaboration with team members in developing an online communication and social media strategy for the CBUWGP.
  • Student will develop deeper personal literacy about the complex issue/s of poverty and strengthen their knowledge and practice with regard to working collaboratively to address poverty issues in community.
  • Student will gain an increased knowledge of the connection between local and global poverty problems.
  • Student will gain skills related to conference planning and implementation
  • Student will gain skills related to video planning and production
  • Student will improve research and writing skills through real-world practice
