WORK STUDY: Project Assistant, Global Social Justice Project

Job Description

The Project Assistant will support the ongoing educational programming, research and outreach work of the Global Social Justice Project. Key tasks for the winter semester will be to assist with our educational programming on Indigenous Issues and Climate Change. This will involve webinar planning and implementation and other outreach work. In collaboration with international students and other campus projects, student will assist project supervisor with information gathering and research related to our current themes (global poverty and climate change, building resilient communities, alternative development models).

Qualifications

  • Professional interest in social justice education, community engagement, and social change;
  • Enthusiasm for social justice issues;
  • Strong interest in building cross and intercultural awareness on campus and in the community;
  • Ability to work collaboratively and to take on independent projects;
  • Ability to commit 15 hours per week;
  • Reliable and organized worker;
  • Good writing and research skills.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Ongoing dialogue with GSJP committee members concerning events, programming and research.
  • Event planning and implementation for speaker series and social justice events.
  • Assist GSJP coordinators with planning of spring conference on Decolonization and Sustainability.
  • Assist with gathering information related to experiential learning for social justice.
  • Assist in training and support of student volunteers.

Learning Outcomes

  • Communication, time management and conflict resolution skills.
  • Research skills (will be doing some practical research tasks – data/information gathering and analysis, report writing etc.).
  • Leadership skills: student will assist in training and skill building for volunteers who will be presenting on social justice issues in the local school system and who will be session facilitators for the spring conference.
  • Student will strengthen knowledge and practice with regard to creating inclusive and diverse communities.
  • Increased knowledge of the connection between local and global social justice issues.
