At the Safety Branch of the Department of Labour, Skills and Immigration, we are responsible for delivering effective and efficient regulatory management for the protection of the public and workers’ safety through education, outreach, inspection and enforcement, equipment registration, permits, and licenses.  Our staff of over 125 employees, located throughout Nova Scotia, do this by using the Pathways to Compliance model to enhance compliance of provincially regulated employees, employers and contractors through setting, promoting, verifying and enforcing requirements under various pieces of legislation.

About Our Opportunity

The Occupational Health and Safety Division of the Safety Branch is presently accepting applications for an internship open to students enrolled in the Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in Occupational Health and Management at Cape Breton University.

As a student, you will be introduced to the role of a Safety Officer in keeping Nova Scotians safe, including the Internal Responsibility System within a variety of workplaces and how information, advice and guidance is provided to employers, contractors, employees, unions, equipment suppliers, and professionals with respect to their duties and responsibilities under the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations.

You will also support work presently underway within the Occupational Health and Safety Division of the Safety Branch and gain firsthand experience building, establishing, and maintaining positive working relations with internal and external groups.

This position reports to the Regional Director, Occupational Health and Safety Division.

Qualifications and Experience

You are in the final semester of the Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety Management at Cape Breton University and are interested in acquiring skills and experience within a regulatory environment.

You are a relationship builder who is able to successfully prioritize work demands and navigate through reporting platforms. You value diversity, equity and inclusion as key factors in maintaining healthy and safe workplaces within an environment committed to continuous improvement.

Additional Information

This position is anticipated to begin the week January 13, 2025 and run for 12-14 consecutive weeks.

There are 2 positions available, one located in Sydney and one in Halifax.

 Pay Grade:  HOURLY

Salary Range:  $19.70 – $23.95 Hourly
