The Negotiations and Operational Policy team is part of the Indigenous Policy Division, which works together with Indigenous Peoples to support the goals of reconciliation and high quality impact assessment. We are a collaborative, flexible and innovative team responsible for leading on the negotiation of impact assessment components of modern land claims and self-government agreements with Indigenous nations.  We also provide support to the Agency on Indigenous-focused operational policy development, including on Indigenous knowledge. This is an exciting opportunity to expand your awareness of the treaty negotiation process and Indigenous aspects of the Agency’s mandate. You will also gain valuable experience within the federal public service.

Job Description:

The Impact Assessment Agency is hiring a co-op student for this winter.  The position is with the Negotiations and Operational Policy team  (Indigenous Policy Division), which is responsible for the negotiation of impact assessment aspects of modern land claims and self-government agreements with Indigenous nations. This important work includes policy analysis, drafting of guidance, briefings for senior management, and research related to Indigenous policy and negotiations.

The position will involve:

• Analysis and research related to the involvement and interests of Indigenous Peoples related to impact ‎assessment, Indigenous knowledge, modern treaties and other agreements
• Coordination, analysis, file management and note taking for internal and external meetings relating to negotiation sessions and other related priority work
• Preparation of briefings and other documents for senior management

Qualifications:

The Agency is looking for someone with the following knowledge and skills:

• Knowledge of current Indigenous issues in Canada
• Knowledge of Indigenous peoples history and culture, including treaties
• Knowledge of research and analysis
• Experience in drafting social science, science, policy or technical documents

Interested candidates must provide a short cover letter and resume demonstrating how they meet each of the knowledge and skills listed above.
