Research Support Officer

About the Job:

The Research Support Officer — Development will support fundraising at Cape Breton University by collecting and entering data into the institution’s alumni database, conducting research on prospective donors, updating contact information for alumni and alumni-owned businesses, and tracking actions pertaining to donor relations and alumni engagement. The individual will also assist with organizing and archiving paper documents pertaining to fundraising and advocacy initiatives.

Job Duties:

  • Engage in primary and secondary research to support the fundraising department at the institution while following appropriate ethical guidelines.
  • Collect biographies and giving history data for prospective donors and ambassadors from public sources.
  • Update alumni contact information and prepare profiles to support the work of the Annual Giving Specialist and the Institutional Advancement Officer.
  • Update contact information for alumni-owned businesses utilizing public directories.
  • Ensure all honorary degree recipients are recorded in the database and augment their profiles with biographical information, such as awards and honours, from public sources.
  • Assist the CRM Specialist with entering research information into the database.
  • Assist in adding/updating actions in the database.
  • Assist in organizing and archiving paper documents pertaining to fundraising and advocacy initiatives.

Qualifications:

  • Position is open to MBA students and/or exceptional 3rd or 4th year students
  • Preference given to students in the Bachelor of Business Administration or Bachelor of Arts
  • Superior research skills
  • Applicants must possess excellent computer skills (MS Office)
  • Exemplary organization skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision
  • Knowledge of fundraising and experience with databases will be considered an asset

To be eligible for Canada Summer Jobs, youth must:
– be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment*;
be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee
protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee
Protection Act for the duration of the employment**; and,
– have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be
legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or
territorial legislation and regulations.
*The youth must be 15 years of age at the beginning of the employment period.
The youth may be more than 30 years of age at the end of the employment period
as long as the youth was 30 at the beginning of the employment period.14
**International students are not eligible participants. International students include
anyone who is temporarily in Canada for studies and who is not a Canadian
citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in
Canada. Youth awaiting a refugee status ruling, as well as those who hold a
temporary visitor visa, youth visa or work visa are ineligible. As the objective of the
Canada Summer Jobs program is to support youth entering the Canadian labour
market, the temporary nature of an international student’s time in Canada does not
allow for a long-term connection to the labour market.
