Job Title: Early Childhood Counsellor

Start Date: July 5th, 2021

End Date: August 27th, 2021

Wage: $12, 95 – 15 per hour

At Bras d’Or Lakes Day Camps (BOLD Centre), we are looking to hire a talented Camp Counsellor to join our team for 8 weeks, part time or full-time, working at the summer day camps for kids aged 4-12.

We offer on-going enrichment through new experiences & challenges, physical activity & sport recreation, creative expression, field trips, and nature excursions with a host of visiting mentors, coaches, musicians, and local artisans.

BOLD focuses on building self-confidence and promoting personal growth and independence in a safe and secure environment. Operating primarily out of BOLD Centre in Baddeck, we are able to offer campers a wide range of in-house activities on rainy days and opportunities for outings on sunnier ones, as well as weekly field trips to local cultural venues. We have the added benefit of being in the heart of Cape Breton, with access to National and Provincial parks and beautiful beaches.

Responsibilities for Junior Camp Counsellor

  • Ensure a group of assigned campers is supervised and safe.
  • Utilize appropriate behaviour management techniques and out of the box thinking.
  • Prepare and lead a variety of activities that are age-appropriate under direction of the Camp Coordinator.
  • Model good behaviour for campers as it relates to sportsmanship, manners, creativity, and respectfulness; be prepared to mediate issues between children.
  • Identify teachable moments and capitalize on them.
  • Facilitate and encourage participation in camp activities.
  • Interact with parents/ guardians in a professional and polite manner.
  • Attendance check.

Preferred Qualifications for Camp Counsellor

  • Prior experience supervising and working with children, ECE in training or teacher in training.
  • Qualifies for the Summer Jobs Program (between the ages of 15 – 30)
  • Musical/artistic hobbies and/or interests
  • Sports/recreation training or coaching certifications AND/ OR ECE training or certifications will be an advantage.
  • Safety related training (WHMIS, First Aid, + CPR, etc.), also available to do on site.
  • Background check (Vulnerable Sector Check, Police Record Check up to date)
  • General mobility including, but not limited, to walking, kneeling, lifting, and standing.
  • Proven ability to maintain a safe environment for others in adherence with provided protocol and standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, and lead activities for groups of children from 5 to 20 children.

The successful candidate will possess the following: a positive attitude and passion for working with children and youth, excellent listening and communication skills, physical stamina, patience, team-oriented attitude.
