Purpose and General Description: 

Every year, the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) hires interns to assist with various aspects of delivering its conservation program, while gaining valuable skills in the conservation sector. In 2024, the Nature Conservancy of Canada will be hiring one communication intern (writer) to work for the Atlantic Canada Region. 

The communications intern will assist both the communications and fundraising teams with a wide variety of content development, outreach, research, and promotional activities. Working independently and with NCC staff, the intern will help to develop regional content for NCC’s digital and print publications, promote NCC’s regional activities in communities across the Atlantic provinces, contribute to both virtual and in-person event coordination, and assist with the creation of materials intended for donors. The intern will also assist with the organization of digital assets.  

This position is a great opportunity for the successful candidate to apply classroom theories and skills to practical and hands-on work. Tasks such as researching stories, conducting interviews, writing, editing and proofreading for a variety of media, as well as assisting with media outreach and event promotion will allow the intern to apply and develop skills that are highly valued in the communications and public relations sectors of the workforce. 

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Develop and draft stories for digital platforms and print publications. 
  • Assist in editing and proofreading content for digital and print publications. 
  • Researching various topics for story development. 
  • Conducting interviews with staff and external supporters and partners. 
  • Creation of written content for social media and online marketing campaigns. 
  • Provide coordination and planning for social media content.  
  • Provide writing support for community events. 
  • Assist the communications team with ongoing activities as needed. 

Required Skills and Attributes: 

This posting is targeted to individuals possessing the following skills:  

  • Excellent writing skills with an aptitude for identifying and telling persuasive stories. 
  • Experience with editing, proofreading and fact-checking.  
  • Experience, a strong understanding and ability to write compelling text for a variety of digital platforms including social media, websites and e-newsletters. 
  • Creative and detailed eye for typography and photography. Photography skills considered an asset. 
  • Experience working within PC platform and SharePoint file management system. 
  • Organized with a strong attention to detail. 
  • Strong digital production skills. 
  • Effective communication skills, including an ability to interact with the public. 
  • Ability to work independently and within team environments. 
  • An interest in nature, conservation and wildlife considered an asset. 

Terms of Employment: 

  • Subject to funding, this is a 17-week position from May 6 until August 30, 2024. 
  • Compensation: $19.00/hour. 
  • This position is based in NS, NB, PEI, or NL. 
  • The successful candidate can work in one of NCC’s Atlantic offices or from their home office. 
  • Some position funding may require the candidate to have been attending university or college and returning to school in the fall. Some funding may require the candidate be aged 30 or under.
