Job Description:

The Little White Schoolhouse Museum, located at 20 Arthur Street in the town of Truro, Nova Scotia, preserves and shares the history of public education and teacher education in Nova Scotia. The museum is a former one room schoolhouse and portrays life in a rural school in the early 20th century. A basement archive includes records of former students at the Nova Scotia Normal/Teachers College, as well as textbooks, photos and other documents related to education.

The Little White Schoolhouse Museum is hiring a Museum Assistant, to work 10am to 5pm Tuesdays to Saturdays from May 31 to August 31, 2022. The candidate must be a permanent resident of Nova Scotia, or have lived in Nova Scotia since November 30, 2021, and must be enrolled in a post-secondary institute for full-time studies in the fall of 2022. The position is for 35 hours per week, with salary of $13.50 per hour.

The ideal candidate for the Museum Assistant position will:

  • be enrolled in museum or archives studies, or history with consideration given to students of archaeology, education and library studies;
  • have excellent English verbal and written communication skills;
  • have strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office;
  • be friendly and be comfortable speaking to large and small groups;
  • be adaptable, able to work independently or as part of a team
  • be self motivated with excellent time management skills;
  • provide a reference from previous employment or volunteer position;
  • provide a valid Police Security Check.

The following qualifications are desired but not essential:

  • ability to communicate verbally in French;
  • training in First-Aid and WHMIS; and
  • experience working or volunteering in museums.

The main duty of the Museum Assistant is to assist the volunteer curator in all aspects of running the museum during the summer open season, including:

  • opening and closing the museum each day at the appointed time;
  • greeting visitors and ensuring that they have an interesting, informative and enjoyable experience at the museum;
  • managing the museum’s social media and on line presence and responding to emails, telephone and in-person queries;
  • assisting the volunteers in the preparation of temporary and permanent exhibits;
  • maintaining visitor attendance records;
  • handling retail sales and keeping the gift shop area tidy and inventory stocked;
  • safekeeping and recording of monies received for admissions, shop sales, or other donations and depositing same with the treasurer from time to time;
  • assisting with special events (such as fund raising events, workshops or presentations, celebrations);
  • attending to daily routine cleaning;
  • completing inventories, reports and other tasks related to collection management;
  • entering data into museum’s computer database and digitizing documents as required;
  • reporting breakages, losses or other problems associated with the museum collection and furnishings;
  • receiving donations of artifacts to the museum, providing temporary receipts and obtaining information about the donation and the donor as required on the forms provided by the LWSM;
  • performing administrative duties as directed by the curator.
