SUMMER EMPLOYMENT 2021 WORK STUDY: Anti-fouling Coating Student Assistant

  • Location: Cape Breton University-Remote
  • Deadline: June 23, 2021

Job Title:  Anti-fouling Coating Student Assistant

20 hours/week for 8 weeks

Job Description/Duties:

With Prof. Xu Zhang in Chemistry, and Dr, Kshitij Jha of Kavacha (a start-up company in PEI), we are doing a literature review and a series of experiments to develop a no or low toxicity anti-fouling paint for aquaculture raceways and ship hulls that will reduce the accumulation of biofilms and attached crustaceans (such as barnacles and oysters). Current ant-fouling strategies rely on metal-based paints leaching toxic elements to marine ecosystems, leading to contamination of harbour areas and endocrine disruption in some marine species. Currently due to COVID constraints, the project is focused on reviewing the existing literature and producing a review article for publication.

Qualifications:

  • Studying Biology, Chemistry, or related discipline at CBU
  • Interest and enthusiasm in addressing biofouling challenges by assisting with laboratory exposures
  • Willing to occasionally check-in on lab exposures on evenings as experimental needs dictate
  • Attention to detail
  • Team Player, able to work and communicate well with others
  • Must be a full time student in good academic standing

Learning Outcomes:

The assistant will develop skills applicable to a variety of future jobs, primarily through researching primary literature and extracting and organizing pertinent information. The opportunity to practice technical writing leading to inclusion as an author in a published review article will greatly enhance employment marketability.
