Waterfront Baddeck Association Is hiring 2 COASTAL RESTORATION TECHNICIANS

Waterfront Baddeck Association is considering naturalizing a portion of their waterfront to achieve environmental sustainability. Their mandate is to advise the Village Commissioners of Baddeck on issues pertaining to the waterfront on behalf of the people of Baddeck, visitors to the area, and the broader community in a transparent, financial, and environmentally sustainable manner.

THE JOB DESCRIPTION
The community technicians’ primary responsibilities will be environmental monitoring and community outreach. Technicians will be responsible for:

– Monitoring potential sites: 20-acre salt marsh, waterfront in Baddeck,shallow water and Kidston Island. Monitoring will consist of species count and distribution (both plant and animals), measuring changes in sediment deposit/erosion using stakes, and water parameters. The monitoring programs will include the accurate completion of data sheets (training to be provided).
– Participating in research conducted locally by researchers from CBU, Dalhousie, NSCC and eNGOs.
– Organizing and leading hikes and outdoor events
– Collecting, entering and cataloguing historical & monitoring data
– Researching topics of interest to the community (Climate change, sediment transport, natural shoreline protection, salt marshes) and presenting the information to community through tours, presentations, signage & online.
– Posting content on research & monitoring to social media
– Maintaining scientific equipment (camera, measuring equipment).
– Enhancing the wharf visitor experience

FINANCIAL DETAILS
Wages: $17.00/hr
35 hours/week. 15 weeks
Start date: May 15, 2023
Benefits: EI, CPP, vacation pay

QUALIFICATIONS
– Basic knowledge in plant & animal ID and sampling procedures
– Experience with Excel and PowerPoint
– Experience creating presentations and posters
– Strong written and verbal communication skills including social media
