Position Summary

The Atlantic Regions Communications Intern will assist the communications department of NCC with a number of tasks, ranging from researching and writing stories aimed at NCC donors and supporters across the country, along with photo research and archiving, supporting events, and other communications-related activities.

This position is a great opportunity for the successful candidate to apply classroom theories and skills to practical and hands-on work. Tasks such as sourcing photos, primary research, writing, editing and proofreading will allow the intern to apply and develop skills that are highly valued in the publishing and communications sectors of the workforce.

Specific Responsibilities

1. Source and draft stories for NCC’s digital and print publications;
2. Assist in editing and proofreading stories for digital and print publications;
3. If video editing skills are present, create short videos for use on web and Social Media;
4. If design skills are present, create designed materials as needed;
5. Develop new website content;
6. Edit and update outdated website information;
7. Upload images to the NCC image database and tag them appropriately, including a back catalogue;
8. Assist with the coordination, logistics, and promotion of summer events;
9. Assist the Communications team with ongoing activities as needed.

Skills and Abilities

This posting is targeted to students possessing the following skills:

1. Excellent writing skills, with an aptitude for identifying and telling persuasive stories;
2. Ability to work independently and in team environments;
3. Experience editing, proofreading, and fact-checking;
4. Experience and understanding of digital communications platforms including social media, website, and e-newsletters;
5. Organized, attention to detail;
6. Strong communication skills, including ability to interact with the public to convey a conservation message;
7. Design, multimedia, and other creative skills an asset;
8. An interest in nature, conservation and wildlife an asset.

Terms of Employment

• Must be a Nova Scotia student enrolled in a Co-op program;
• Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment;
• Must have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations;
• Full-time, 16-week (May 10 – August 27) position;
• Wage is $17/hour (37.5 hrs/week);
• This position is based in Halifax, NS.
