Job/Project Description: Wetland Policy Student Research Assistant

Background: Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM) is currently reviewing its Municipal Planning Strategy (MPS).  This presents an opportunity to incorporate stronger protection for natural assets like wetlands, riparian zones, and source water supply areas into the strategy and supporting land use by- laws.

Responsibilities: Using the Wet Loss Net Loss 2019 Symposium Report as a starting point, the main deliverable from this research assistant position will be to research, review, tabulate and produce a report discussing differences in key protection mechanisms and best management practices for natural assets from other jurisdictions that could be incorporated into the CBRM MPS. Special focus should be on municipal governments in Atlantic and Maritime Canada but consideration should also be given to other levels of government and areas with similar environmental and climatic conditions in North America and Europe.

The successful candidate should have an interest in the integration of policy with environmental conservation, wetlands and restoration and in helping to shape the next iteration of the Municipal Planning Strategy for the Cape Breton Regional Municipality.

Student Qualifications:

The candidate should possess:

  • good organizational, research, communication and computer skills (Microsoft Office familiarity)
  • interest and aptitude in policy, conservation
  • biology background preferred
  • must be an upper year student

Wages and Duration: $16.35/hr for 20 weeks

Hours per week: Flexible. Limited to 15 hours/week during the academic year.
