The Confederacy of Mainland Mi’kmaq (The CMM) is a Tribal Council representing eight Mi’kmaw communities of mainland Nova Scotia.
Our mission is to proactively promote and assist Mi’kmaw communities’ initiatives towards self-determination and enhancement of
community. The CMM is located in the Millbrook Mi’kmaw Community in Nova Scotia and has over 120 Employees. The CMM’s
Department of Environment & Natural Resources is currently looking for an energetic, mature, and independent candidate to fill the role
of Research & Engagement Officer.
Position Overview
This position is part of a joint Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas (IPCA) program that includes The Confederacy of Mainland
Mi’kmaq (CMM), Unama’ki Institute of Natural Resources (UINR), and Eskasoni Fish and Wildlife Commission (EFWC), and is led by the
Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi’kmaw Chiefs. IPCAs are lands and waters where Indigenous governments have the primary role in protecting
and conserving ecosystems through Indigenous laws, governance, and knowledge systems; culture and language are the heart and soul
of an IPCA. The IPCA program is supporting Mi’kmaw communities in the development of mechanisms to establish IPCAs for a variety
of land types as well as the identification of community priorities to inform stewardship plans for the long-term care of each IPCA.
The Research & Engagement Officer will support the IPCA Project Coordinator and will provide research, engagement, and
communication support for the development and establishment of IPCAs in mainland Nova Scotia.
Overview of Responsibilities:
Develop a social and traditional media plan to support engagement and communication on IPCAs and Mi’kmaw-led
conservation with Mi’kmaw communities and the public.
Assist with event planning and execution including planning, advertising, registration, coordinating meeting spaces, catering,
processing workshop claims, and note-taking.
Collect, collate, and organize associated engagement and communications details and documents for future use.
Organize logistics for meetings with Mi’kmaw communities and external organizations as required.
Prepare presentations, content, etc. to various committees, groups, organizations, etc. as required.
Research and review IPCA-related materials in various forms and summarize key points for incorporation into internal and
external reports.
Develop annotated bibliographies of resources reviewed and create a document filing system for knowledge, data, and report
storage.
Present updates and prepare reports for the IPCA Project Coordinator as requested.
Attend periodic meetings that may be requested by Senior Management, Managers, and Project Coordinators and take notes
when requested.
Position Requirements:
Knowledge of First Nations culture, history, and current affairs.
Excellent communication and presentation skills, written and spoken.
Strong work ethic and ability to work in an environment requiring discretion and confidentiality.
Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
High values in teamwork, client service and professionalism.
Ability to apply creativity and innovative thinking to community focused solutions.
Ability to work unsupervised with a high level of productivity and the ability to seek and take direction.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to be adaptable, flexible, and manage multiple priorities.
Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation, with ability to travel within Nova Scotia.
Knowledge of Indigenous-led conservation is considered an asset.
Familiarity with reviewing technical documents, policy and legislation is considered an asset.
Education and experience in the field of Indigenous-led conservation considered an asset.
Salary/Employment Term:
Salary range: $40,000 per year. This is a full-time contract position until March 31st, 2023, with opportunity for renewal, and subject to
the policies and practices of The CMM. The CMM offers a substantial benefits package to all employees.
