Recreation Youth Support Worker

General Description:
Under the Direction of the Recreation Manager, the Recreation Youth Support Worker will be responsible for
engaging youth to participate in a number of recreational programs as well as to nurture the competitiveness and
sportsmanship. The Sipekne’katik Community & Youth Recreation Program encourages the role of the Recreation
Youth Support Worker to maintain a positive attitude to model such qualities as fairness, leadership, and to be a
reflection of a positive role model. The hours of work will be based on a 35-hour work week as determined by the
Supervisor.
Responsibilities:
• Opens Gym according to established procedures.
• Prepares sign-in and stat sheets on a daily basis.
• Plans and delivers structured and free play child and youth physical activities.
• Promotes health living.
• Ensures a safe and healthy environment.
• Performs routine checks to ensure bathrooms, hallways, stair wells, door entrances, lobby, and gymnasium
are free from destruction and vandalism.
• Supervises all children and youth participants.
• Records and submits incident/accident reports to Supervisor within 24 hours.
• Sets forth rules with children and youth.
• Lifeguards at the outdoor swimming pool during the summer months.
• Addresses any issues arising immediately (swearing, bullying, fights, etc.)
• Conducts risk assessments and uses emergency procedures as required.
• Ensembles equipment needed for programs.
• Dismantles and puts away all equipment used to stage events.
• Ensures that the Multi-Purpose Centre is clear of any personal items when closing and ensures all entry
and exit doors are securely locked.
• Notifies Supervisor of any needed supplies, equipment, sign-in and stat sheets, water, broken or lost
equipment, or of any other concerns or questions.
• Chooses music that is appropriate for Indian Brook Community & Youth Rec programs (not derogatory,
racist, explicit and/or hard core).
• Assists certified instructors with the delivery of programs and supervision of participants.
• Follows policies, procedures, and code of ethics.
• Participates in professional workshops, courses, and ongoing learning.
• Attends and assists of hosting community events and tournaments as directed by Manager.
Qualifications:
• Related work or volunteer experience with recreational programs/activities.
• Post secondary education in a related field is preferred, but not required.
• A genuine interest in recreational programming and healthy lifestyles.
• Willingness to become a certified lifeguard/instructor for the outdoor summer pool.
• Must be dependable, people oriented and comfortable working with all ages.
• Experience working in a First Nations Community is required.
• Must be adaptable and flexible to deal with unexpected/unpredictable schedules.
• A criminal records check is required. Having a criminal record is not a determinate factor.
• A Child Abuse Registry check is required.
