Marine Atlantic is currently looking for an Occupational Hygienist to work with our Health, Safety and Environment department. The successful candidate may choose to work from Port aux Basques, NL or North Sydney, NS locations.
The Health Safety and Environment(HSE) department is responsible for the development and promotion of health, safety and environmental protection programs throughout the company, both on vessels and at our shore facilities. The department renders high-level advice, guidance and information concerning health, safety, and environmental protection issues to managers, supervisors, safety committees and employees.
The role of the Occupational Hygienist (OH) is to evaluate and monitor health and safety hazards and develop strategies to control risks in the workplace. The OH provides services to the corporation and its traveling public through health education and health protection, including enforcement of applicable legislations.
Key Areas of Responsibility
- Provide day to day technical advice, expertise and direction to ensure both compliance with legislative requirements and conformance to industry and company standards.
- Participate in the development and implementation of Industrial Hygiene specific initiatives and programs and complete detailed occupational hygiene technical reports.
- Inspect the sanitary conditions of food services, hotel areas, and other public facilities both on vessels and shore based to ensure they operate in accordance with all applicable legislation
- Assist in development and delivery of educational programs, toolbox meetings, Job Safety Analysis and general training relevant to MAI employees, the public and contractors.
- Provide timely investigation, response and guidance on health-related issues associated with physical, chemical, and biological materials.
- Conduct surveys including but not limited to indoor air quality (IAQ), radon gas, radiation, noise assessments, as well as any other hazardous substances or related safety concerns.
- Collect samples of water for analysis; measure physical, biological and chemical workplace hazards; and conduct safety and environmental audits, tabulates and communicate results.
- Investigate health and safety related complaints, spills of hazardous chemicals, outbreaks of diseases or poisonings and workplace incidents.
- Coordinate and Inspect workplaces to ensure that equipment, materials and production processes do not present a safety or health hazard to employees or to the general public.
- Work diligently, to promote a physically and psychologically safeworking environment, that is diverse, accessible, inclusive and equitable.
- Assist in the accomplishment of company objectives by performing other related duties as required.
What qualifications do I need to be considered for this opportunity?
Education, and Experience
A bachelor’s degree or college diploma in a discipline such as food or health science, environmental studies, public health and occupational hygiene with 3 to 5 years’ experience in a related position
OR
A combination of equivalent education, job-related training, and work experience in a related position.
Additional Qualifications
- Demonstrated knowledge of applicable Public Health Legislation
- General understanding of Canadian Health and Safety legislation (Canada Labour Code Part II or provincial regulations)
- Ability to work in a team environment and independently
- Strong interpersonal, written and oral communication skills•Proficient in Microsoft OfficeAsset Qualifications
- Eligibility for Certification with the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors
- Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) and/or Registered Occupational Hygienist (ROH)
