Mi’kmaq Arts Manager
L’sipukt-Sydney, Mi’kma’ki-Nova Scotia
One-year contract position with potential to extend.
Full-time (37 hours per week).
Salary $45,000 to $52,000 annually, dependent upon experience.
This position is tax exempt as majority of work takes place in community.
Benefits include paid holidays, vacation, paid sick leave, extra paid time off from December 24-January 2 and health insurance benefits. Preference will be given to Indigenous applicants, with priority given to members of the Mi’kmaw community.
The Mi’kmaq Arts Manager will work closely with Cape Breton Centre for Craft & Design and the five Mi’kmaw communities in Unama’ki to organize, coordinate and implement artistic and educational programming for Indigenous artists and residents. The Mi’kmaq Arts Manager will be supported by staff of the Centre and the Unama’ki Advisory Committee to support craft programming.
Duties:
• Identify and build relationships with Indigenous craft artists and makers.
• Work with the five Mi’kmaw communities to develop workshops in contemporary and traditional Mi’kmaw craft to ensure the development and transfer of craft skills.
• Work with Centre staff to develop Indigenous exhibitions.
• Research opportunities for future programming and partnerships.
• Conduct project evaluations and provide testimonials attesting to project impacts.
• Manage Mi’kmaq Arts Assistant to support the project.
• Support the development of a Mi’kmaw Mentorship Program; and
• Other related duties in support of a successful team, program, and organization.
Essential Qualifications:
• Post-Secondary education in the arts or cultural sector, or 2+ years relevant community arts programming experience.
• Understanding of the Unama’ki-Cape Breton arts and cultural sector; and
• Previous experience working with artists, cultural centres, events, etc.
Skills and Requirements:
• Knowledgeable about First Nations visual arts and traditional craft.
• Proven experience in supporting visual arts and traditional craft development and programming.
• Excellent problem-solving skills.
• Proficient with office software i.e.: Microsoft Office suite.
• Proficient report writing skills.
• Working knowledge or fluency in Mi’kmaw is an asset. • Flexibility in working hours, including some evening and weekend work. • Access to a vehicle, a valid driver’s license, and ability to travel.
