About The CMM

The Confederacy of Mainland Mi’kmaq (The CMM) is a Tribal Council representing eight, Mi’kmaq communities of mainland NS. Our mission is to proactively promote and assist Mi’kmaq communities’ initiatives towards self-determination and enhancement of community.  The CMM main office is in the Millbrook Mi’kmaw Community in Nova Scotia and has over 90 Employees. The CMM’s Department of Aquatic Resources and Fisheries Management (DARFM) is currently looking for an energetic, mature, and independent candidate to fill the role of Manager of Technical Files and Habitat Development.

The Mi’kmaw Conservation Group (MCG) is focused on promoting and restoring the concept of Netukulimk in Nova Scotia’s watersheds. To ensure that future generations will have access to a healthy environment. The MCG team targets its work on a variety of marine and freshwater management projects and participating in programs that involve youth mentorship and building Mi’kmaw capacity. The MCG also addresses issues related to species-at-risk, water quality, commercial fisheries and directed habitat restoration.

Position Overview

Reporting to the Senior Director of Aquatic Resource and Fisheries Management, the Manager of Technical Files and Habitat Development will be responsible to provide oversight and guidance on projects and to branch staff. Supervise, plan, and oversee branch operations and fiscal requirements. Liaise with and maintain working relationships with project partners, Community leaders and stakeholders.

Overview of Responsibilities

  • Lead and Manage the Technical Files and Habitat Development branch of DARFM.
  • Provide oversight and guidance on projects and ensure staff are adhering to funding deadlines and projects remain within budget.
  • Plan and maintain systems and procedures for operating efficiency
  • Prepare an annual report for the Technical Files and Habitat Development branch of DARFM.
  • Explore funding opportunities and develop projects as recommended by the Senior Director.
  • Facilitate the preparation and analysis of funding proposals and reports.
  • Supervise, plan, and oversee the operations and fiscal requirements including budget of the project.  Identify and recommend department/unit policies, practices and staff training to Senior Director
  • Liaise with and develop working relationships with project teams, project partners, and external technologists and researchers.
  • Write reports and deliver presentations and briefings for management as required.

Position Requirements

  • Have knowledge and/or interest in aquatic resource management, science, education, or a related field or relevant working experience in a related field.
  • Experience working in or with First Nation communities.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrates a passion for aquatic conservation.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding outdoor work in and around water.
  • Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work productively as part of a team.
  • Experience with common office software (e.g., Microsoft Office, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)  Must have access to a vehicle and have valid driver’s licence.

Asset Qualifications (Not required)

  • Knowledge and understanding of fish habitat/migration.
  • Valid First Aid/CPR and WHMIS certification.
  • Previous experience in non-profit sector.

Salary/Employment Term:  

Salary range: $50,000 – $55,000/year. This is a one-year contract with the opportunity for renewal.
