Marine Atlantic is currently looking for a Labour Relations Advisor to work with our Human Resources department located in North Sydney, NS. This is a term position with an end date of July 31, 2024.The Labour Relations (LR) Advisor, reporting to the Labour Relations

Manager, will be responsible for the administration of allocated collective agreements and assisting in the negotiation of those contracts. Marine Atlantic is a multi-union environment and has six collective agreements.

Additional Key Areas of Responsibility

  • Perform legal research and make recommendations relating to the interpretation and application of collective agreements and company policies.
  • Monitor timelines and make recommendations for grievance resolution at each step of the grievance procedure.
  • Coordinate and participate in Labour Management Committee
  • Assist with preparation and participate in Collective Bargaining for applicable collective agreements.
  • Coordinate and conduct disciplinary investigations in accordance with company policy and terms of applicable collective agreements.
  • Track the status of and report on grievances and investigations. Analyze data to identify trends and remedies to common issues.
  • Interact with managers, supervisors, union representatives, and employees in the identification and resolution of issues relating to the collective agreements.
  • Work diligently, to promote a physically and psychologically safe working environment, that is diverse, accessible, inclusive and equitable.
  • Assist in the accomplishment of company objectives by performing other related duties as required.

What qualifications do I need to be considered for this opportunity?

Education and Experience

A Bachelor of Business Administration with a major in Labour Relations or Human Resources or an equivalent major from a recognized university.

AND

A minimum of 2 years’ experience working in a Human Resources position in a unionized environment.

OR

A combination of equivalent education, job-related training, and experience in a

related position.

Additional Qualifications

  • Labour relations experience in a unionized environment.
  • Experience in interpretation of collective agreements and application of labour relations and labour law principles.
  • Strong interpersonal, impact and influence skills with the ability to engage others effectively through a confident, collaborative, and convincing style.
  • Detail oriented, well organized, and a demonstrated ability to function effectively with a high degree of interdependence and autonomy.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize, prioritize, and multi-task.
  • Strong written and communications skills.
  • Strong research and problem solving skills.
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office Applications (Excel, Power Point, and Word).

Asset Qualifications

  • Chartered Professional in Human Resources (CPHR) or progressing towards obtaining CPHR.
  • Training and/or experience in investigation procedures.
  • Training and/or experience in alternate dispute resolution and interestbased negotiations.
