General Description:
Under the direction of the Band’s HR Manager, the HR Officer is responsible for providing day-to-day HR services for the LSK (L’nu Sipuk Kina’muokuom) School and Sipekne’katik’s Band Office. If a fully qualified candidate is not identified during the recruitment process a “HR Officer-in-training” may be hired instead, where they will receive on-the-job training and mentoring.
Responsibilities:
- Work with LSK staff to ensure ongoing positive relationships between supervisors and coworkers.
- Assist with the recruitment, selection, hiring and employee orientation process.
- Assist with the monitoring and updating of employee leave records, sick leave requests, benefit claims and policy enquiries.
- Update the LSK/Band on-call list and find suitable candidates for temporary work.
- Assist with the employee complaint resolution process.
- Maintain various tracking systems that includes, but is not limited to, criminal/vulnerable record checks and training records.
- Provide OH&S administrative support, such as assisting with WCB claims, incident reports and other legislated OH&S requirements.
- Participate in learning and development opportunities.
- Provide back-up support to the HR Coordinator during her/his absence.
- Other related duties as assigned by the supervisor(s), such as maintaining filing systems (hard and soft copies), creating forms/templates, updating job descriptions, photocopying, drafting correspondence, attending meetings, coordinating HR events and conducting research projects.
Qualifications:
- Post-Secondary education with willingness to continue learning on-the-job.
- One year of office experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
- Ability to interpret and apply HR Policies, Procedures and Legislation.
- Excellent communication skills with a positive attitude.
- Willingness to embrace lifelong learning and support organizational change.
- Excellent organizational skills with ability to pay attention to detail.
- Excellent computer skills in MS Office with an interest in learning new database software.
- Experience working in a First Nations Community or openness to learn the culture.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain total confidentiality and to remain unbiased.
- The HR role can be very demanding with multiple priorities that requires the incumbent to have strong coping skills and the ability to deal with upset employees at times.
- Must have a valid driver’s license & reliable vehicle for travel.
- A criminal records check is required.
Salary Range: $40,594-$52,966 for fully qualified person.
