About The CMM

The Confederacy of Mainland Mi’kmaq (The CMM) is a Tribal Council representing eight Mi’kmaq communities of mainland Nova Scotia. Our mission is to proactively promote and assist Mi’kmaq communities’ initiatives towards self-determination and enhancement of community. The CMM is located in the Millbrook Mi’kmaw Community in Nova Scotia and has over 120 Employees. The CMM’s Department of Community Services & Infrastructure is currently looking for an energetic, mature, and independent candidate to fill the role of Emergency Management Mitigation Officer.

Position Overview

Under the direction and oversight of the Senior Director of Community Services & Infrastructure, the candidate will be reporting to the Emergency Management Program Manager. The Emergency Management Mitigation Officer will be tasked with the role of coordinating and implementing wildfire mitigation, planning, and awareness activities for emergency management in eight (8) of CMM’s member communities.

This will be done by assisting the Emergency Management Program Manager in conducting the following: wildfire mitigation efforts, training, FireSmart practices, engagement and awareness activities targeted towards climate change and wildfire preparedness, along with any duties that may arise throughout the project.

Overview of Responsibilities

  • Conduct research on current wildfire mitigation trends and practices within First Nations communities, as well as emergency management systems specifically designed in response to climate change events.
  • Conduct activities targeted towards the identified needs, gaps, opportunities, and barriers within communities’ wildfire mitigation preparedness.
  • Establish new and maintain existing relationships with community staff, administration, and public works, to ensure positive working relationships in future projects.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of an annual work plan by offering innovative ideas and suggestions for projects relative to the program.   Prepare final project reports and presentations.
  • Any other related duties as required and as requested by the Executive Director or Senior

Director, such as to participate on committees or special projects.

Position Requirements

  • Post-secondary education (Bachelor’s degree or diploma) in Science or Management OR an equivalent combination of education and experience in both areas of study.
  • Minimum of one-year direct working experience in the field of environmental science, emergency management, community planning, or related field.
  • Ability to work effectively with other departments, levels of government, industry, and the general public.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a leader on multi-discipline teams, or independently, and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent presentation, facilitation, and training skills.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Must have the ability to travel within Nova Scotia.
  • Experience working in or with First Nation communities considered an asset.

Salary/Employment Term:  

Salary range: $40,000 to $45,000 per year. This is a one-year contract position with the opportunity for renewal and subject to the policies and practice of the CMM.
