About The CMM

The Confederacy of Mainland Mi’kmaq (The CMM) is a Tribal Council representing eight, Mi’kmaq communities of mainland NS. Our mission is to proactively promote and assist Mi’kmaq communities’ initiatives towards self-determination and enhancement of community.  The CMM main office is in the Millbrook Mi’kmaw Community in Nova Scotia and has over 100 Employees. The CMM’s Department of Environment & Natural Resources (DENR) is currently looking for an energetic, mature, and independent candidate to fill the role of Sespite’tmnej Kmitkinu Conservancy Communications Officer.

Position Overview

This position is part of a joint Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas (IPCA) program that includes The Confederacy of Mainland Mi’kmaq (CMM), Unama’ki Institute of Natural Resources (UINR), and Eskasoni Fish and Wildlife Commission (EFWC), and is led by the Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi’kmaw Chiefs. The CMM, UINR, and EFWC are supporting all 13 Mi’kmaw communities in advancing IPCAs within Nova Scotia.

IPCAs are lands and waters where Indigenous governments have the primary role in protecting and conserving ecosystems through Indigenous laws, governance, and knowledge systems; culture and language are the heart and soul of an IPCA.

The Sespite’tmnej Kmitkinu Conservancy Communication Officer will be provided direction from the Sespite’tmnej Kmitkinu Coordinator and will work closely with the IPCA Coordinators and Manager, to provide engagement and outreach support.

Overview of Responsibilities

  • Prepare general communications correspondence and reports as required.
  • Take meeting minutes at various meetings including Advisory and Board of Directors meetings.  Provide support in the development and maintenance of a website for Sespite’tmnej Kmitkinu Conservancy.
  • Prepare content, pictures, graphics, etc. for communication purposes such as newsletters, releases, articles, social media, and other communications materials, as required.
  • Assist with planning events (webinars, working groups, in-person community events) including planning, advertising, registration, and coordinating meeting spaces.
  • Assist the Conservancy staff with the development of educational and communication materials and facilitate product completion.
  • Work with the IPCA teams and external partners to develop joint communication outputs.
  • Work to finalize the Conservancy’s logo and support the implementation of a branding strategy alongside the IPCA team.
  • Develop a signage policy for Conservancy and IPCA lands based on the aforementioned branding strategy.
  • Assist with other day-to-day communication and engagement tasks related to the creation and functioning of the Sespite’tmnej Kmitkinu Conservancy, including supporting general IPCA development and participating in monthly IPCA Communications meetings.
  • Responsible for implementing, reviewing and updating the Conservancy’s Communication Plan.
  • Prepare and present updates and reports, including an annual communications report as requested.

Position Requirements

  • Experience with various social media platforms including designing content for and delivering social media communications.
  • Experience in basic website design and proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Knowledge of First Nations culture, history, and current affairs.
  • Excellent communication skills, written and spoken.
  • Strong work ethic and ability to work in an environment requiring discretion and confidentiality.
  • High values in teamwork, client service and professionalism.
  • Ability to be organized, adaptable, flexible, and manage multiple priorities.
  • Must have valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and ability to travel within Nova Scotia as required.

Asset Qualifications (Not required):

  • Relevant post-secondary education (college diploma or bachelor’s degree) and/or related experience.
  • Knowledge of land conservation, land trusts, and Indigenous-led conservation.  Fluent Mi’kmaw speaker and writer.

Salary/Employment Term:  

Salary: $40,000 per year. This is a Permanent Position (pending successful one-year probationary contract).
