Community Relations Officer
About The CMM
The Confederacy of Mainland Mi’kmaq (The CMM) is a Tribal Council representing eight, Mi’kmaq communities of
mainland NS. Our mission is to proactively promote and assist Mi’kmaq communities’ initiatives towards self-determination
and enhancement of community. The CMM main office is in the Millbrook Mi’kmaw Community in
Nova Scotia and has over 120 Employees. The CMM’s Department of Community Services & Infrastructure is
currently looking for an energetic, mature, and independent candidate to fill the role of Community Relations
Officer for Mi’kmawey Green Communities (MGC).
Position Overview
Reporting to the Mi’kmawey Green Communities Program Manager, the Community Relations Officer will be
responsible for but not limited to: Gathering information regarding municipal service agreements and bylaws;
organizing and presenting at advisory committee meetings with community leadership, municipalities and other
stakeholders; performing or assisting the Field & Marine Debris Technician with Field Duties, identifying
opportunities and funding for Communities; Delivering workshops / meetings regarding recycling, waste separation,
and other related topics of interest to Communities; Working in Communities on pilot projects regarding composting
and in- home sorting of waste; and participation in community events.
Key Areas of Responsibility
Develop presentations and materials to be used at Advisory meetings and workshops.
Perform home visits and deliver training of Community Project Leads on in home waste sorting.
Develop strong relationships within communities, community leaders and community members.
Assist the Field and Marine Debris Technician with field related duties.
Update and document the network of Solid Waste Management community stakeholders for each community
– both internal and external.
Coordinate and deliver meetings in Communities to discuss community composting and non-traditional waste
pick up and other areas of interest.
Visit established Community Compost stations and ensure they are running smoothly.
Create educational materials regarding non-traditional waste and establish a pickup schedule for such items in
each Community. This includes travel to Communities to assist in disposal and recording the items for diversion
tracking.
Draft and prepare reports as needed.
Assist the DCSI Communications Officer with content for articles and communication material as required.
Position Requirements:
Successful completion of post-secondary education in waste management, environmental science, or a related
field.
Working experience in project management and/or strategic planning.
Knowledge of research methodologies and standards pertinent to environmental issues related to waste
management.
Experience working in or with First Nation Communities.
Knowledge of current First Nation Community challenges and opportunities relating to solid waste management.
Ability to work effectively with other departments, levels of government, industry, and the public.
Demonstrated ability to work as leader on multi-discipline teams, or independently, and meet deadlines.
Excellent presentation, reading and writing skills
Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access)
Must have a drivers’ license, reliable vehicle, and the ability to travel within Nova Scotia.

Salary/Employment Term:
Salary range: $ 40,000 per year. This is a Permanent Position (pending successful one-year probationary
contract).
