Community Engagement Specialist – Acadia First Nation

The Confederacy of Mainland Mi’kmaq (CMM) is a Tribal Council located in Mi’kmaki and provides services to the eight Mi’kmaw communities of mainland Nova Scotia. Our mission is to proactively promote and assist Mi’kmaw communities’ initiatives towards self-determination and enhancement of community. The CMM’s main office is situated in the Millbrook Mi’kmaw Community and has over 100 employees. The CMM’s Department of Aquatic Resources and Fisheries Management (DARFM) is currently looking for an energetic, mature, and independent candidate to fill the role of the Community Engagement Specialist.

The DARFM is focused on promoting and restoring the concept of Netukulimk in Nova Scotia’s watersheds. Staff members are involved in various marine and freshwater resource management projects. The objective of this work is to ensure that future generations will have access to a healthy environment. The services provided promote youth mentorship and Mi’kmaw capacity building. Key project areas include species-at-risk, marine spatial planning, water quality, commercial fisheries, and habitat restoration.

Reporting to the Ocean Science Manager and the Research and Spatial Planning Officer, the Community Engagement Specialist will be a responsible for coordinating and providing information on the Oceans Protection Plan Program initiatives. Their duties will include preparing educational materials, organizing training sessions and coordinating engagement sessions. Other tasks associated with this position include presenting to advisory committees and following safety protocols associated with field work in aquatic environments. The duration of this contract is until March 2023. The renewal of this contract will be dependent on funding.

Key Areas of Responsibility: 

  • Aid project lead with project deliverables and results in a cohesive manner.
  • Act as point of contact for community members interested in participating in these projects.
  • Schedule project meetings and track action items.
  • Coordinate project engagement activities and assist in their execution.
  • Develop outreach materials for the projects.
  • Oversee the acquisition of project materials and resources.
  • Assist with tracking expenses and work on budget forecast.
  • Coordinate project engagement activities and assist in their execution.
  • Prepare and produce project performance updates to management.
  • Coordinate project meetings, outreach events and training sessions.
  • Organize research, reference materials, and other related materials in an easily assessable manner.
  • Assist the MCG Advisory Committee and the CMM in the analysis of research or reference materials.
  • Write reports and prepare PowerPoint Presentations for Management.
  • Prepare and produce project performance updates to management.
  • Attend periodic meetings that may be required and/or requested by the Program Manager.
  • Contribute and participate in aquatic files at the DARFM, including research activities, meetings, community sessions, etc.       Other duties may be required and/or requested by the Ocean Sciences Manager or Senior Director.

Position Qualifications (combination of skills through training, life experiences and education):

  • Experience working in or with First Nation communities.
  • Willingness to learn.
  • Ability to carry out administrative tasks (e-mails, phone calls, schedule meetings, reports).
  • Passion for conservation of the environment.
  • Good organization and communication skills.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of office software (e.g. Microsoft Office, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Must have access to a vehicle and a valid driver’s licence and have the ability to travel within Nova Scotia.
  • Experience coordinating meetings or events considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of Mi’kmaw Communities or First Nation Communities and Rights and Treaties considered an asset.

Salary/Employment Term:  Part-time Position (20 hrs/per week). $22 per hour.

  • The duration of the contract is until March 2023. Contract renewal will be dependent on funding.
  • Preference will be given to an Acadia First Nation band/community member.
