Position Title: Community Advocate Support Worker

Overview

The Elizabeth Fry Society of Cape Breton (EFSCB) is a non-profit, charitable organization that engage with vulnerable women, girls and gender diverse people to foster reintegration, rehabilitation, personal empowerment and to address the root causes of criminalization. The people we support are often at a high risk of returning to the cycle of poverty, homelessness and self-harm that can cause criminalization. We are devoted to improving the lives of women and gender diverse people in Cape Breton through comprehensive housing supports, innovative programming initiatives, justice system reform and through building individual strength and capacity in all of the women and gender diverse people we serve. EFSCB provide the structure for marginalized women, girls and gender diverse people to transform their lives from a cycle of poverty and insecurity to one of stability, growth and hope.

We will be opening a second location at 23 Dryden Avenue, Sydney, NS and are currently looking to hire Full Time (3), Part Time (2) and Casual Employees (6) to work in our community staffed homes. We are looking for energetic creative individuals committed to providing engaging support to our residents and assist them to live their best lives.

Areas of Responsibilities:

  • Supervision of women; ensure and promote the physical care of women including hygiene, diet and medication
  • Delivery of in house programs and provide on-going support counselling
  • Maintaining Adherence to Policies and Health and Safety Standards
  • Participate in on-going staff training and professional development
  • Maintain client records and reports, including admission and discharge procedures
  • Ensure house guidelines and policies and procedures are adhered to, maintain a detailed log of any and all incidents that may occur with staff and client care
  • Responsible for security, maintaining residents and visitor lists and ensuring only authorized persons are permitted on the property
  • Act as a role model at all times
  • Promote holistic healing and cultural sensitivity
  • Assess and evaluate on-going individual women’s progress towards reintegration
  • Maintain respectful, inclusive, empowering environment for women
  • Able to implement an emergency evacuation plan
  • Ensure the home is clean, tidy and in a well-kept condition; arrange for repairs when required

Qualities and Characteristics we are looking for in potential employees:

  • Knowledge of community resources and organizations
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to work within a team as well as independently
  • Critical thinking and problem solving skills; able to make appropriate equitable decisions and function in a crisis
  • Demonstrated ability to support individual(s) with high activity levels and lifestyles
  • Possess effective communication skills both verbal and written and an ability to establish communication with residents
  • Develop and implement individualized plan of care that led them to our door, which may include Behavior Support Plans/Safety Plans, as required
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain a safe and healthy physical environment
  • Recognizes residents as unique individuals with unique cultural, spiritual and psychosocial needs
  • Commitment/practice in professional ethics
  • Supportive counselling skills
  • Knowledge of justice system
  • Understanding of solution focus/feminist/behavioural approaches
  • Ability to multi-task and able to manage time effectively
  • Must display non-judgmental/confidential skills
  • Be patient and empathic
  • Flexible to work a variety of shifts including evenings and weekends
  • Must have high initiative

Key Qualifications:

  • University degree or Diploma in social sciences or 3 years equivalent training/experience working with community based women’s organizations
  • Certificate in first aid/CPR required
  • ASSIST
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention

Wages: $19.00 – $22.00 per/hr
