About The CMM
The Confederacy of Mainland Mi’kmaq (The CMM) is a Tribal Council representing the eight Mi’kmaq communities of mainland Nova Scotia. Our mission is to proactively promote and assist Mi’kmaq communities’ initiatives towards self-determination and enhancement of community. The CMM’s Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) is currently looking for a motivated and knowledgeable candidate to fill the role of a Climate Monitoring Officer.

Position Overview
Reporting to the DENR Program Manager, the Climate Monitoring Officer is responsible for providing technical expertise to monitoring programs with the Mi’kmaw Climate Monitoring Initiative.

Overview of Responsibilities

  • Establishing an air quality monitoring network
  • Implementing forest and aquatic climate monitoring programs
  • Provide training for community members,
  • Identifying a data management system for monitoring data, and generally ensuring that all MCMI data collected follows scientifically-sound protocols that can be used to inform adaptation planning.
  • Other tasks as needed to develop resilience and monitoring capacity within Mi’kmaq First Nation communities, such as attending meetings, preparing final project reports and presentations, and drafting new project proposals.

Position Requirements

  • University degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. Environmental Science, Climate Change, Biology, Resource Management) OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of one year of direct experience working in the field of environmental science.
  • An understanding of climate change and its impact on the environment and Indigenous communities.
  • Knowledge of protocols and equipment used to monitor a variety of climate change indicators.
  • Experience delivering environmental or educational programming to youth.
  • Excellent communication, teaching, and training skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and meet deadlines both independently and on multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong work ethic and ability to work in an environment requiring discretion and confidentiality.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • High values in teamwork, client service and professionalism.
  • Valid drivers’ license, reliable vehicle, and ability to travel.
  • Experience working in or with First Nation communities would be an asset.
  • Experience with community-based monitoring or citizen science programs would be an asset.

Salary/Employment Term:
Anticipated Salary: $50,000-$65,000/year depending on qualifications and experience. This is a Permanent Position (pending successful one-year probationary contract).
