Boat Safety Liaison Officer

The Confederacy of Mainland Mi’kmaq (CMM) is a Tribal Council located in Mi’kmaki and provides services to the
eight Mi’kmaw communities of mainland Nova Scotia. Our mission is to proactively promote and assist Mi’kmaw
communities’ initiatives towards self-determination and enhancement of community. The CMM’s main office is
situated in the Millbrook First Nation and has over 100 employees. The CMM’s Department of Aquatic Resources
and Fisheries Management (DARFM) is currently looking for an energetic, mature, and independent candidate to fill
the role of the Boat Safety Liaison Officer.

The DARFM is focused on promoting and restoring the concept of Netukulimk in Nova Scotia’s watersheds. Staff
members are involved in various marine and freshwater resource management projects. The objective of this work is
to ensure that future generations will have access to a healthy environment. The services provided promote youth
mentorship and capacity building. Key project areas include species-at-risk, marine spatial planning, water quality,
commercial fisheries, and habitat restoration.

Reporting to the Program Manager, the Boat Safety Liaison Officer will be responsible for coordinating and providing
information on boat safety practices. Their duties will include preparing educational materials, organizing training
sessions and purchasing safety equipment. Other tasks associated with this position include presenting to advisory
committees and following safety protocols associated with field work in aquatic environments.

Position Qualifications (combination of skills through training, life experiences and education):
 Experience related to boat and marine safety.
 Passion for conservation of the environment.
 Experience working in/with First Nation communities.
 Willingness to learn.
 Familiar with administrative tasks (such as email, scheduling meetings, reports, Microsoft office.)
 Organizational skills.
 Communication skills.
 Work as part of a team.
 Must have access to a vehicle and a valid driver’s licence.

Position Assets:
 Confidence working on boats and doing field work.
 Familiar with non-profit sector.
 Coordinating meetings or events.
 Outgoing and personable

Salary/Employment Term:
Salary range: $35,000-$37,000 per year. This is a contract position with an opportunity for renewal (June 1st, 2021
to March 31st, 2022).
