Pictou Landing Band Council – A’se’k Assessment Research and Environmental Coordinator

 

Background:

Pictou Landing Band Council is currently seeking an experienced project coordinator to fill the role of A’se’k Assessment Research and Environmental Coordinator. The successful candidate will oversee the development and deployment of various ecological and environmental monitoring projects throughout the A’se’k (Boat Harbour) area. Projects will span a variety of ecosystems, including those considered aquatic (e.g., freshwater or marine) and terrestrial (e.g., forests, wetlands, etc.), with different focal taxa depending on the project. Focal taxa may include, but are not limited to fish, amphibians, plants (e.g., food plants, medicines), insects (e.g., pollinators), other invertebrates (e.g., freshwater mollusks), and various mammalian species.

 

Position Description:

The A’se’k Assessment Research and Environmental Coordinator will work directly with the Pictou Landing First Nation (PLFN) community to develop and carry out a community-led and community-driven environmental assessment within A’se’k and its surroundings. The successful candidate will be required to regularly attend community sessions that relate to future or ongoing work under the Indigenous Habitat Participation Program (IHPP) umbrella within PLFN.

 

Importantly, when contributing to the development and planning of the larger Community-Led A’se’k Assessment project, traditional knowledge and cultural considerations must be kept in mind and implemented wherever possible and/or necessary.

 

The individual selected for this position will regularly collaborate with other employees from the PLFN Band Council and the PLFN IHPP, including a Research and Social Coordinator and Field Team Lead, among other student, seasonal, part-time, or full-time employees. Depending on experience level and leadership skills, some supervisory duties may be allocated.

 

Duties:

  • Engage with community members on topics that relate to the IHPP workplan and community priority list in relation to the community-led assessment.
  • Manage community priority list and design projects to ensure that community concerns are being met.
  • Maintain consistent engagement with PLFN community.
  • Regularly liaise with various project partners (g., academic institutions, research institutions, potential funders, other external organizations).
  • Develop and deploy ecological and environmental monitoring, habitat assessment, and ecosystem restoration projects which may vary in scope and scale.
  • Assist Research and Social Coordinator with development of outreach and educational programming initiatives.
  • Complete background research and literature reviews as necessary.
  • Assist with fieldwork coordination during appropriate seasons.
  • Ensure that data remains openly accessible to community members.

 

Essential Qualifications:

  • Graduate from University program with a concentration in Biology, Environmental Science, Chemistry, or related discipline.
  • Experience or involvement in research initiatives/projects within a relevant/related field.
  • Experience developing (or carrying out) different types of ecological/environmental monitoring protocols and procedures.
  • Enthusiastic team player capable of working on a multi-disciplinary team employing a Two-Eyed Seeing vision for embracing all relevant knowledge and perspectives.

 

Assets:

  • Strong track record of compiling reports (scientific and otherwise) of varying contexts and scales.
  • Understanding of SARA, COSEWIC assessments.
  • Knowledge of GPS/GNSS operation in a field setting.
  • Knowledge of iNaturalist platform (g., creating quality observations, uploading data, project creation, managing additional fields, etc.).
  • Previous work experience with outreach and education programs, with emphasis on those targeting youth/Elders.
  • Knowledge of Mi’kmaw culture, values, and language.

 

Intern eligibility criteria:

Participating interns must be:

  • No more than 30 years of age at the start of the internship;
  • Graduated from a post-secondary program;
  • A Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, or person who has been granted Refugee status in Canada;
  • Not in receipt of Employment Insurance (EI) during the internship; and,
  • Not currently working for hiring organization.

 

Compensation:

  • $22 per hour.

 

Hours of Work:

  • Maximum of 35 hours weekly.
  • Some availability required beyond working hours to accommodate community sessions within PLFN.

 

Term Length:

  • Contract term is 10 months (June 1, 2024 – March 31, 2025).
  • Contract extension/renewal may be possible, pending availability of additional funds.
