General Description:
Under the direction of the Director of Family Wellbeing department, the Occupational Therapist will be
responsible for providing services to community members who require physical, developmental,
emotional or social ability support. This position plays a vital role in the wrap-around care the Family
Wellbeing department provides.
Responsibilities:
• Conduct physical, cognitive, emotional and environmental needs to determine limitations,
abilities and goal development.
• Develop individualized treatment plans based on assessments, goals and family dynamics
through evidence based practices.
• Maintain accurate and detailed treatment/progress notes, client profiles and interdisciplinary
health communications.
• Provide regular reports to Department and/or legislatively required individuals, organizations or
governments.
• Recommend and implement modifications to physical spaces, support the identification and
implementation of assistive devices/adaptive equipment.
• Advocate for clients and families through resource allocations/access, community inclusion &
participation, funding requests (Nova Scotia Disability Support Program, Jordan’s Principle, NIHB,
NSHA and/or other organizations).
• Collaborate and consult with other care providers to promote the wrap-around approach to care
for families and clients.
• Write letters of support/recommendation for access to services, devices or funding.
• Knowledge and understanding of Mi’kmaw culture, values, family systems and challenges.
• Provide support to families in-home and in educational settings.
• Maintain extreme confidentiality with a client/family focused approach
• Educate, coach and empower families with self-management strategies.
• Other related duties as determined by Supervisor such as assisting with the coordination of
community events, community gatherings/ feasts, etc.

Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Therapy
• Member in good standing with the College of Occupational Therapists of Nova Scotia
• 3+ years of experience working as a Registered Occupational Therapist
• Previous experience working in a First Nation Community/with First Nation Children considered a
strong asset
• Criminal Record Check & Vulnerable Sector Check
• Excellent Charting/Notation skills & report writing skills
• Valid Drivers license, vehicle insurance and a reliable vehicle required
