Marine Atlantic is currently looking for a Labour Relations Manager to work with our Human  Resources team located in North Sydney, NS.

Reporting to the Director of Human Resources, the successful candidate will be a key member of the Human Resources leadership team and will oversee all elements of the labour relations function, including but not limited to labour relations strategy, management-union relationships, collective bargaining, policy development, workplace investigations, attendance
management and grievance administration including arbitrations and disciplinary actions. Leading and directing a team of three employees, the Labour Relations Manager is tasked with creating a labour relations function that is a source of sound, knowledgeable advice and progressive policies that reflect current trends and best practices. The role contributes and leads the implementation of critical elements of the Human Resources
Strategic Plan. Furthermore, this individual will ensure the effective administration of six collective agreements and relevant legislation in a manner that creates a progressive workplace with productive and respectful relations with union representatives.

What qualifications do I need to be considered for this opportunity?

Education and Experience

  • Recognized university degree in Human Resources, Labour Relations or related field
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a senior Labour Relations position within a unionized environment
  • Experience developing, leading and managing a team to meet departmental and individual goals

OR

  • A combination of equivalent education, training, and work experience in a relevant position

Additional Qualifications

  • Extensive Collective Agreement negotiation experience
  • Experience in interpretation of collective agreements and application of labour relations and labour law principles
  • Experience in investigations and disposition of workplace complaints
  • Effective interpersonal, analytical, problem solving, impact and influence skills with the ability to engage others effectively through a confident, collaborative, and persuasive style
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation and regulations and their application in the workplace
  • Awareness of workplace investigation process and experience conducting investigations
  • Knowledge of disability/absenteeism management processes
  • Strong presentation and facilitation skills
  • Detail oriented, well organized and a demonstrated ability to function effectively with a high degree of interdependence and autonomy
  • Demonstrated ability to organize, prioritize, and multi-task
  • Strong research skills
  • Comprehensive written and oral communication skills
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Power Point)

Asset Qualifications

  • Chartered Professional in Human Resources (CPHR) or progressing towards obtaining CPHR
  • Training and/or experience in alternate dispute resolution and interest based negotiations
  • Training and/or experience in investigating procedures
