Position title: Project Coordinator – Invasive Species Identification and Information Guide
Start/end date: September 7 – December 17, 2021
Hours per week: 35 (hours are flexible, but typically 8:30-4:30, Monday – Friday)
Hourly wage: $16.00
Work location: This is a work-from-home position.
Supervisor: Kristen Noel, Coordinator, Nova Scotia Invasive Species Council
Duties:
The Project Coordinator will be responsible for updating and distributing the “Invasive Alien Species in Nova Scotia: Identification and Information Guide” and accompanying fact sheets to promote education and prevent introductions and spread of invasive species in Nova Scotia. The coordinator will lead consultation, interviewing and literature research that is required to collate up-to-date information on invasive species in our region, and assist in producing an updated version of the guide in both print and online formats.
Duties may include, but are not limited to:
- Compiling information and distribution data for invasive species in the province through interviews, reviewing literature, and connecting with experts
- Updating the Guide with new information
- Developing fact sheets that can be used for outreach and education
- Formatting, layout and production of print and online material
- Outreach to promote and distribute the guide to public and partner organizations
Qualifications:
You are pursuing a Bachelor of Science with a major in Biology and a minimum of two years completed
Required competencies:
- You have excellent organizational, research and communication skills
- You have high regard for quality, accuracy and attention to detail
- You are able to work well both independently and as part of a team
- You are proficient in computer applications, including Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel (project may also require use of Adobe, CorelDraw)
- You have experience compiling and organizing data
- Previous experience with iNaturalist would be considered an asset
- Previous experience with invasive species would be considered an asset
Work term outcomes:
- Develop project management skills, including leadership, organization, and effective communication
- Gain knowledge about invasive species and their distribution and impacts in Nova Scotia
- Work with a diverse team of experts within the Nova Scotia Invasive Species Council and partner organizations
- Play an integral role in the development and publication of an updated invasive species guide for Nova Scotia
- Increase public awareness of the threats that invasive species pose to diverse habitats across Nova Scotia
