About the Position

Community Health Nurses support the community’s health care team as well as collaborate with community members, community leadership, provincial services, and federal partners in the delivery of comprehensive, holistic, and culturally safe care.

This is an amazing opportunity to experience the unique culture of the Mushuau Innu First Nation and Labrador. All positions receive paid travel from your established home base to the Nation and back, a travel per diem, a daily per diem while in community, and accommodations are also provided while in community.

What is a Float Pool?

A pool of qualified candidates that is established for Mushuau Innu First Nation’s Health Department. The float pool provides resources to the community that may be drawn from in order to cover short-term, casual, part-time and on-call openings.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Assess the needs of clients to determine and provide health services in both Public Health and Home and Community Care.
• Conduct clinical assessments, assist in the development of services plans, and evaluate the success of implemented plans.
• Manage the care of clients with a variety of needs and diagnoses across the lifespan of the health-illness continuum.
• Guide patients through provincial, territorial, and professional regulatory processes.
• Establish and provide clinical nursing care for clients.
• Assist clients and their families in care planning and understanding the plan of care in consistency with the philosophy of MIFN.
• Liaise with all healthcare providers involved in the patient’s care.
• Practice to the full scope of Registered Nurse responsibilities.
• Enhance communication between patients/families and staff/physicians.
• Act as an advocate to protect and promote the client’s right to autonomy, respect, privacy, dignity, confidentiality, and access to information.
• Document accurate reports in accordance with the ARNNL Documentation Standard.
• Refer and connect patients to other services both inside and outside the hospital.
• Ensure patients’ voices are heard within the healthcare system.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Strong understanding of Indigenous culture, protocols, and the unique healthcare needs of Indigenous patients.
• Knowledge of federal, provincial, and territorial health systems.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to establish rapport with patients, families, and healthcare providers.
• Awareness of Indigenous cultural safety training, anti-racist practice, and trauma-informed care.
• Strong organizational and coordination abilities.
• Fluency in English is required, and additional proficiency in Indigenous languages would be an asset.
• Experience in advocacy and promoting patient rights within the healthcare system is desirable.
• Proficiency with computers and computer systems including EMR and the Client Referral and Management System (CRMS).

Experience and Education Requirements

• Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing.
• Current registration with the College of Registered Nurses’ of Newfoundland and Labrador (CRNNL), or ability to register before start date.
