Job Summary
The Health Science Facilitator’s role is to plan, develop, implement and deliver engaging hands-on activities and presentations on the science of public health and communicable disease prevention in the Discovery Centre and communities across Nova Scotia.
The student will benefit from the opportunity of working in a challenging and dynamic science themed program setting, providing significant opportunity to improve upon their communication skills, organizational skills, budgeting skills, knowledge of science, knowledge of educational practices, and ability to work with the public and children.
Discovery Centre’s mandate is advanced through the presentation of high-quality science based educational programs. The quality of these programs are directly related to the skills and energy of the summer student.
Qualifications:
Current enrolment in a medical science discipline, Biology, Health Promotion, Science Communication, or other relevant field. Fluency in English is essential, bilingual (English/French) preferred. Must be highly organized and ability to work under minimal supervision. Must have valid drivers license (vehicle plus insurance will be provided by Discovery Centre). Applicants must currently be enrolled in the co-op program full time.
Description of Tasks:
The Health Science Facilitator works in the Science Education Department and is directly responsible to the Manager of Science Education. The primary tasks of the position are:
1) plan, develop and deliver hands-on activities and presentations for the public and virtual audiences
2) manage a weekly cash allotment of up to $500 for activities
3) coordinate/purchase supplies and materials for programs
4) prepare summary reports on activities and a final report
5) liaise with community organizations to coordinate activities
6) assist, as needed, with promotional activities
