TITLE: ASSISTANT FLEXOGRAPHIC PRESS OPERATOR
DEPARTMENT: PRINTING DEPARTMENT
REPORTS TO: PRINTING SUPERVISOR

OVERVIEW:

The Assistant Flexographic Press Operator is responsible for support and operation of a flexographic printing press to print on plastic film. Additionally, they are responsible to ensure that all work performed on their press is performed safely, efficiently and with a high level of quality as directed by the Printing Supervisor

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

Pre-Press/Proofing Operations
 Assist in Plate making for making plates as required
 Mounts jobs on proofing equipment in accordance with specifications for cylinder size and gearing
 Compares sample mockups to ensure specified dimensions and lettering are accurate
 Checks for irregularities and defects
 Completes Daily Production Reports
 Ensures work area is clean and tidy

Press Operations
i. Running the Press
 Support and operates all activities of the press to ensure safety, quality and adherence to policies and procedures including conducting pre-op equipment inspections
 Ensures productivity targets are met
 Assists with managing and prioritizing work activities for production personnel assigned to their press.
 Works in conjunction with other Printing Press Operators to ensure the shift obtains its goals set out by the Supervisor
 Deals with any issues as they arise and communicates between shifts to ensure excellent hand offs occur on their press
 Cuts and prepares cores for each job
 Ensures the availability and consistency of inks and other additives and determine settings to control colour and viscosity while running the press
 Manage material movement for unwind and rewind side of press
 Ensures orders and material inventories are accurately accounted for in SAP (computer-based business operation software),
 Performs and documents quality checks to ensure product meets customer specifications
 Notifies Supervisor of defective material and creates Quality Notifications, if required
 Retrieves print cylinders, reviews shop floor papers, and colour standards for each job
 Removes ink pump screen, delivers to Crash Cart for cleaning; reassembles
 Ensures work area is clean and tidy
 Ensures all produced product is packaged and labelled to the customers specification

ii. Changeover on the Press
 Ensures the press is completely prepared for a changeover
 Assembles print cylinder gears; prepares cylinders
 Ensures all information and tooling is verified before the order goes into press
 Ensures the press is configured to produce product to customer specifications
 Ensures solvent cans, ink pales, packing materials and other necessary supplies are full for jobs
 Returns used inks to drop-off area and retrieves pump wash solvent
 Places stickers on pails being returned to Ink Room
 Ensures all equipment is properly cleaned, maintained, and stored when removed from press

Post- Press/Crash Cart Operations
 Assist in slitting the printed film if required
 Maintain components and rebuilds ink chambers for presses
 Stork jobs as required
 Strips and clean plates as required
 Manage cylinder ordering and returning for plate mounters.
 Maintain ink magnets, ink pail covers, ink filters, anilox guards, press ink drip pans, and shut offs for totes as required
 Manages operation of solvent distillation unit
 Ensures work area is clean and tidy

COMPETENCIES:

 Must have strong communication skills in English, both written and verbal
 Established history of satisfactory attendance and punctuality levels
 Must be able to keep a positive attitude in a fast-paced environment
 Must be reliable, with high integrity and a strong work ethic
 Must have a strong mechanical aptitude
 Must have superior colour-perception skills
 Must have a demonstrated strong attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy
 Must have ability and willingness to work scheduled rotating shifts
 Must have ability to lift items of 40 lbs and perform duties involving repetitive stretching motions, stair climbing, ladder climbing, and standing

REQUIREMENTS:

 Complete testing per WI 6.2.1.2 – General Hiring Practice Guidelines
 High School diploma, or equivalent

 

 

PREFERRED:

 Leadership abilities and a proven team player with good interpersonal skills (people skills)
 Knowledge of production execution in SAP (business operation software)

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

 Abides by all Emmerson Packaging’s Management System policies, follows procedures, work instructions and other requirements including adherence to EH&S Act regulations.

 Obligation to take any necessary steps/actions to continue adherence to the Management System (quality and environmental). If the necessary steps are outside assigned authority, there is an obligation to bring the issue to his/her supervisor.

 Performs other duties as required by the Manager/Supervisor.
