About the Job:

Cape Breton University is seeking to hire a Youth Development Co-Ordinator who will assist our institution in engaging with our African Nova Scotian and African Canadian youth and their families. This position will work closely with Student Development Officers in the Student Affairs department to facilitate community connections, plan events and develop resources.

Must be able to work remotely. Due to current circumstances, CBU employees are presently working from home; a plan may be implemented to return to regular office hours, depending on the progress in Nova Scotia towards eliminating the threat of COVID-19. Remote work will require access to a reliable internet access.


• Help develop a CBU mentorship program for youth of African Nova Scotian descent
• Work with community organizations to better understand available resources for youth and families of African Nova Scotian and African Canadian descent and to help identify if there is a need for additional/alternate programs
• Foster relationships with local representatives of the Nova Scotia Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, African Canadian Services Branch (Cape Breton)
• Plan events for students and families on CBU campus and/or virtually
• Participate in CBU campaigns in connection with CBU’s Human Rights & Diversity Office
• Identify and support youth engagement in community events
• Identify higher education academic advising needs for youth of African Nova Scotian descent


  • Applicants currently enrolled in post-secondary studies, or who have recently completed their post-secondary studies will be given preference.
  • Demonstrated excellent leadership and problem-solving skills.
  • Preference will be given to candidates who are of African Descent.
  • Experience working with youth in educational and/or social environments
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with tact and cultural sensitivity.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and maintain good working relationships with other employees.

Canada Summer Jobs Eligibility:
• be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
• be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment; and,
• have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
• The youth must be 15 years of age at the beginning of the employment period. The youth may be more than 30 years of age at the end of the employment period as long as the youth was 30 at the beginning of the employment period.
• International students are not eligible participants. International students include anyone who is temporarily in Canada for studies and who is not a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada. Youth awaiting a refugee status ruling, as well as those who hold a temporary visitor visa, youth visa or work visa are ineligible. As the objective of the Canada Summer Jobs program is to support youth entering the Canadian labour market, the temporary nature of an international student’s time in Canada does not allow for a long-term connection to the labour market.
