Brief Job Description

The successful candidate will contribute to organizing a symposium with a mix of speakers representing wetland practitioners and land-use policy and decision-makers, from academia, municipal, provincial and First Nations governments, and non-government organizations. The Wetlands Policy Workshop will take place at Cape Breton University on May 21, 2020. Regionally, the project focuses on education and community outreach in order to develop an appreciation and awareness of wetlands habitat from both a Western and Indigenous perspective, and on exploring emerging issues of policy implementation in Nova Scotia, using Cape Breton Island/Unama’ki as a case study.


The candidate must have:

  • excellent communication skills (writing)
  • ability to follow instructions
  • excellent organizational skills
  • social media skills
  • computer skills
  • an interest in policy and wetlands


The successful candidate will work with the Wetlands Planning Committee, under the supervision of Barb Glassey (Chair, Wetlands Planning Committee). The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting with:

  • program planning
  • event organization
  • assist with planning and coordinating the speaker series, including contacting the invited speakers; coordinating travel, accommodation and scheduling and overseeing registration logistics
  • required to liaise with members of the public, speaker and contributors.
  • contribute to written and social media promotional materials
  • attend committee planning sessions, as required

Learning Outcomes

The successful candidate will have assisted with planning, organizing and promoting a major event. The candidate will gain experience in working with a planning committee, members of the public and contributors. The candidate will gain knowledge of wetlands and policy issues.
