WORK STUDY: PSYCHOLOGY CONFERENCE SUPPORT TEAM MEMBER

Job Description:

The student will be an integral part of the Psychology of Language Learning Conference Planning Team. This large international conference for Psychology will take place at CBU in June of 2020. Work includes assisting the peer review committee with preparing the program for approximately 250 presentations. Duties also include sponsorship coordinator, assembling the program, responding to email queries from attendees, contact with suppliers and vendors on and off campus to ensure smooth planning, coordinating the publishers’ exhibit, preparing conference materials (signs, banners, etc), and other conference planning duties.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of psychology is essential, an upper level psychology student is preferred
  • Strong skills using Word and Excel
  • Good communication skills, comfortable asking businesses for sponsorship
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Responsible and Attention to detail, the ability to meet deadlines is essential
  • Well organized with good negotiation skills
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Ability to work efficiently and independently
  • Event planning experience is an asset

Duties:

  • Process submissions by extracting the summaries and organizes submissions by keywords for conference program groupings
  • Create the sponsorship options package
  • Contact sponsors, collect logos and materials for website and promotions
  • Work with Conference Organizers to invoice and recognize sponsors
  • Keep a record of all contacts (positive and declined) for the conference organizers
  • Create printed and online material for conference attendees (e.g., program, plans/room, maps, travel advice, banners, etc)
  • Work with vendors and suppliers, including publishers
  • Assist with volunteer recruitment
  • Other conference duties that may be assigned

Learning Outcomes:

Learn aspects of organizing and planning a conference including – interacting with international attendees, publishers, and vendors – promoting CBU and Cape Breton – budget planning and goal setting – understanding why and how conferences are planned, including the peer review process – improved time management and organizational skills – improved negotiation and self-presentation skills

15 Hours/Week for 10 Weeks
