Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFP) Cooperative Development Intern

The Confederacy of Mainland Mi’kmaq (The CMM) is a Tribal Council representing the eight Mi’kmaq communities of mainland Nova Scotia.  Our mission is to proactively promote and assist Mi’kmaq communities’ initiatives towards self-determination and enhancement of community. The CMM’s Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) is currently looking to fill the role of Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFP) Cooperative Development Intern. This is an 8-week contract position.

Position Overview:

Under the direction of the Senior Director of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and reporting to the DENR Program Manager, the NTFP Cooperative Development Intern will be mainly responsible for supporting the development of the final stages of the Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFP) Cooperative business. Activities will include registering business and business name, creating outreach materials and resources to engage Mi’kmaq community members and outside organizations/groups on NTFPs and cooperative businesses, attending and assisting in planned events such as webinars, visiting communities to be involved and included with their meetings/events, as well as attending local markets to support Mi’kmaq crafters, artisans and those working with NTFP products.

Responsibilities:

  • Creating educational materials to be used for outreach (brochures, calendar, articles, social media posts,etc.)
  • Carrying out, supporting, and attending planned events (ie: local markets, meetings, webinars, etc.)
  • Conducting research on NTFPs and opportunities available for Mi’kmaq communities
  • Engaging and informing Mi’kmaq community members as well as outside organizations and groups on NTFP opportunities
  • Registering the cooperative business and the business name
  • Advertising and recruiting members for the cooperative
  • Working with outside organizations to support the final steps of development for the cooperative (ex: Ulnooweg, consultants)

Position Requirements:

  • Knowledge of business development, non-timber forest products and/or knowledge of Mi’kmaq traditional crafts.
  • Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment.
  • Must be between the ages of 15 and 30 years at start of internship.
  • Must have an aptitude for safe work practices and the ability to multi-task in a busy work environment.
  • Must be able to work productively independently while responding to feedback.
  • Must have excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Knowledge of plant and wildlife species of Nova Scotia considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated interest in future employment in the environmental or business sectors considered an asset.
  • Experience working with Mi’kmaq communities, Mi’kmaq elders, and knowledge keepers an asset.
  • Experience working with or knowledge of NTFPs considered an asset.

Salary/Employment Term:  

Anticipated starting salary: $15 per hour – 8-week contract position.
