Research Support Officer-Human Rights

Job Description:

To work collaboratively with the Human Rights officer on Issues of social justice in the current climate. Research and develop materials around anti-racism, microaggressions and sexual violence in post secondary to name a few.  Develop materials to be used in educational programs and campaigns.

Job Duties:

  • Represent the student perspective throughout the collaborative development process with new and relevant ideas.
  • Design and deliver training program to various groups of individuals for the Bystander Program.
  • Research related topics for development and implementation of the program for students and faculty members.
  • Develop, organize, and communicate training sessions/schedules across diverse groups of individuals on campus.
  • Develop and distribute resources that are relevant to higher education and goals of the program.
  • Evaluate and communicate program progress.
  • Lead and train a group of individuals who will assist in the administration process.
  • Conduct social media campaigns for the program. (E.g. prevention and awareness)
  • Assist in reviewing Sexual Violence policy & guidelines and recommend amendments if/when necessary.
  • Design and distribute promotional content for developed programs and projects using Microsoft office.
  • Represent the student perspective throughout the collaborative development process with new and relevant ideas.
  • Research related topics for development and implementation of programs.
  • Summarize and report research findings
  • Assist in event and program presentation
  • Contact external resources through email and phone to gain knowledge for project development.
  • Develop and present creative ideas for projects and review existing documents for new ideas.
  • Work collaboratively with a team to create content relevant to the community.
  • Assist in reviewing Sexual Violence policy & guidelines and recommend amendments if/when necessary.
  • Work on development of community based webinars
  • Assist in the community in training based needs around cultural competencies.

Qualifications

  • Eligible to participate in Canada Summer Jobs program (see below):
  • Current Student at Cape Breton University
  • Knowledge and understanding of: Cape Breton University’s Sexual Violence Policy & Guidelines & Sexual Violence trends on prevention and awareness.
  • Ability to discuss and present trauma provoking topics in an effective and empathetic manner.
  • Excellent presentation skills and experience in group facilitation.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with various groups of individuals (working relationships, student groups, etc.)
  • Strong attention to detail with excellent organizational, administrative and time-management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and be accountable.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team in order to share ideas and obtain feedback.
  • Creative problem-solving skills
  • Flexible at organizing and maintaining various schedules among volunteers.
  • Knowledge and experience in creating and maintaining various social media platforms.
  • Ability to design and distribute creative posters and training media
  • Passionate in making a positive change for all individuals on campus while compassion to those who have experienced these traumas.

Canada Summer Jobs Eligibility:

  • Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment*;
    be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee
    protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee
    Protection Act for the duration of the employment**; and,
  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be
    legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or
    territorial legislation and regulations.

*The youth must be 15 years of age at the beginning of the employment period.
The youth may be more than 30 years of age at the end of the employment period
as long as the youth was 30 at the beginning of the employment period.14

**International students are not eligible participants. International students include
anyone who is temporarily in Canada for studies and who is not a Canadian
citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in
Canada. Youth awaiting a refugee status ruling, as well as those who hold a
temporary visitor visa, youth visa or work visa are ineligible. As the objective of the
Canada Summer Jobs program is to support youth entering the Canadian labour
market, the temporary nature of an international student’s time in Canada does not
allow for a long-term connection to the labour market.
