SUMMER EMPLOYMENT-WORK STUDY: Artist/Landscaper, Twin City Pocket Park Project

Artist-Landscaper (2 positions) – Twin City Pocket Park Project

14 hours per week for eight weeks

Job Description/Duties:

This project is to create a small “pocket park” honouring Walbrzych, the twin city of the Cape Breton Regional Property, on a designated lot in Whitney Pier at the corner of Victoria Road and Franklin St. (Cape Breton University is a partner in the twin-city initiative.) Specifically, the student employees would design and create a mural honouring Walbrzych on a picket fence, which would need to be built and installed, and do landscaping, including selecting and planting aesthetic flowers, shrubs, and an oak tree. The student employees will make purchases from a small budget that will be provided by the project. There will be consultation with the faculty supervisors and community stakeholders (by Zoom). These positions require significant experience with art and gardening.

Qualifications:

  • Experience with creating works of art and public art, preferably outdoor art
  • Experience in gardening and horticulture
  • Ability to work in teams and to in collaboration with community stakeholders
  • Willingness to work outdoors for extended periods of time (much of the work will be outdoors) and to travel between locations within the Sydney area.

Learning Outcomes:

Gaining experience with planning and “placemaking”; research to determine appropriate components; gaining experience with the development of public spaces; working with designs; studying the impact of public spaces on neighbourhoods
