SUMMER EMPLOYMENT 2023: Basketball Cape Breton – Sport & Recreation Counsellor

Basketball Cape Breton is looking to build an enthusiastic core of staff to lead and support its 2023 spring
and summer programming, working together to grow the game of basketball on Cape Breton Island.
These roles will provide students with the opportunity to give back to their community, impact youth
through sport, gain valuable work experience and access mentorship and training opportunities to
develop as leaders. While these positions run from May to August 2023, part-time or hourly work may be
available following the spring/summer term.

Position Title: Sport and Recreation Counsellor
Hours: 35 hours/week – 16 weeks (maximum) – combination of daytime, evening, and some weekend
work required
Pay: $16/hour
Start Date: May 2023 (flexible)
Job Location: This position will be primarily based at Cape Breton University (1250 Grand Lake Rd) and
will include work in the broader Cape Breton Island community with some requirement to work remotely
for program planning and administration.

These exciting positions provide successful candidates with the opportunity to lead on-court activities for
Basketball Cape Breton summer programs. Reporting to a day-to-day program leader, Counsellors will
develop program planning and leadership skills in working together to develop and execute program
plans that are age and stage appropriate for participants, creating a positive, inclusive sport environment
across all BCB initiatives. Successful candidates will be supported with mentorship and development
opportunities and will receive training through nationally recognized sport leadership programs with
partners such as Canada Basketball and Jumpstart.

● Coach on-court basketball sessions and lead youth engagement activities during summer
programs such as camps, leagues, and clinics, creating an inclusive and positive environment for
● Collaborate with Sports & Recreation Leader to build and execute program plans that develop
age-appropriate basketball skills using best practices from Canada Basketball and Basketball
Nova Scotia.
● Use creativity and communication skills to make youth programs engaging, interactive, and fun.
● Assist with the coordination of logistics including registration and set-up / tear-down of courts,
classrooms, and equipment.
● Represent Basketball Cape Breton at summer programs and in the community.
● Support the development and implementation of new programs to reach underserved youth on
Cape Breton Island.

● Knowledge of basketball fundamentals.
● Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a team environment.
● Experience working with children and youth in a coaching capacity is considered an asset.
● Beginning or returning to full-time studies in a university/college program for Fall 2023 may be
considered an asset, in addition to the ability to receive university/college course credit for the
