About Our Opportunity

The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic is the oldest and largest Maritime Museum in Canada.  The Museum is a valuable historical, cultural and educational institution. It is the largest site in Nova Scotia that collects and interprets various elements of Nova Scotia’s marine history. Visitors are introduced to the age of steamships, local small craft, the Royal Canadian and Merchant Navies, World War II convoys and The Battle of the Atlantic, the Halifax Explosion of 1917, and Nova Scotia’s role in the aftermath of the Titanic disaster.

We are seeking an individual to be part of our Visitor Services team who exemplifies customer service excellence and demonstrates strong communication skills by welcoming and assisting visitors from various diverse backgrounds, by providing accurate and timely information to them in a dynamic work environment. The Visitor Services staff operate admissions cash registers, multi-media equipment and work at the reception desk.

Members of the visitor services team are responsible for the presentation of high quality, entertaining, and informative interpretive programs and tours that will enhance the museum experience and exceed visitor expectations. Interpretive activities will focus on aspects of the rich maritime heritage of this region and rely on a wide variety of presentation methods which may include tours, interpretive demonstration and/or storytelling.

Main Areas of work:

  • Admissions and Reception
  • Robertson Store, Museum Galleries, Theatre, Canadian Scientific Ship Acadia
  • The Museum is also home to our mascot, Merlin, a Rainbow macaw. Visitor Services staff are involved in the feeding and care/maintenance of this feathered member of our staff.

This position reports to the Curator of Visitor Experience.

Qualifications and Experience

To be successful in this role, you have three years of related experience, an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.  Previous experience serving the public in a heritage or cultural field (i.e. museums, art galleries, science, and interpretive centres, etc.) is considered an asset.

You have sound knowledge of the region’s maritime history and well‑developed communication skills, value working within diverse settings and understand the different needs of diverse client groups both internally and externally.  You have excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills and experience working in a team environment.  You are proficient and have experience using Microsoft office programs (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint).

Strong assets include:

  • Cash handling;
  • Fluency in French or another second language;
  • Knowledge of the region’s natural and cultural history;
  • Public program delivery and presentation skills;
  • Certification in First Aid, Super Host or equivalent; and
  • Certification or training in a museum studies and/or tourism and hospitality program.

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Working Conditions

The 2022 season runs from April 20, 2022 and ends November 5, 2022.

Work hours include shifts on Saturdays, Sundays, some evenings and holidays.

Pay Grade:  CL 13  

Salary Range:  $1,407.60 – $1,532.16 Bi-Weekly
