About Us

Building and maintaining our provincial infrastructure is no small job. We’re recruiting for summer students to help our province achieve big things!

At the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal (TIR), we manage 23,000 kilometres of roads and highways and 4,100 bridges across Nova Scotia. Our District Highway Operations Division plays a critical role in managing snow and ice control services, road maintenance and repair services throughout the province.

About Our Opportunity

Primary Accountabilities

You will assist staff with a wide range of administrative duties, which support the Eastern District’s highway operations and contribute to the overall effectiveness and efficiency of the District by:

  • Performing reception duties;
  • Providing customer service to both the public and District staff; and
  • Organizing, filing, and preparing documents.

There will be opportunity for you to participate in and collaborate with various staff on special projects or assignments; helping you further enhance and develop your skills.

Qualifications and Experience

You are currently enrolled as a business administration student and returning to school in the fall (or in the next applicable semester for the education program).

As the ideal candidate you:

  • are familiar with computers including office software such as Microsoft Word and Excel;
  • are organized and able to prioritize your work; and
  • demonstrate excellent communication and customer service skills when responding to enquires by phone, email or in person.

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Working Conditions

  • Normal work week is 35 hours/week, 7 hours/day.
  • Typically located in a comfortable office environment.
  • Much of the time is spent in a comfortable position with frequent opportunity to move about.
  • Regularly reads and interprets multiple sources of information, regular requirement to type, read and work on a computer.
  • May experience pressure with deadlines and need for accuracy.

Additional Information

This opportunity will start approximately May 3, 2021 with an end date of September 3, 2021.

This position will be based out of Sydney River.

Pay Grade: HOURLY

Salary Range: $16.50 – $26.90 Hourly
